I just went to my JD dealer to get the filter pak for my 2520. I was told that I did not have to change all the filters and fluids. In fact I was told to just change my oil. I believe that contradicts the manual. Any thoughts?

I changed engine oil, hydraulic oil, and all filters except fuel filters. I also cleaned the hydraulic strainer.

I am in industrial maintenance and know the cost of the filters and oil are small compared to the cost of a problem down the road.

I did find some metal on the hydraulic strainer, which is normal at the first oil change. Better to get it out early than have it floating around the system.

I was told the same thing by my dealer.....just change the engine oil/filter at 50 hrs. They said not to worry about servicing the hydraulics until 150 hrs. I will probably do it later this summer which will put me at about 100 hrs.

I was told the same thing by my dealer for both my 2210 and 2520

"Don't worry about that 50 hour hydro change - we don't do it"

So, I guess the dealer has more education about these machines than the engineers that build them, and recommend the 50 hour hydro change?

Mine is changed at 50 hours........

I went to my dealer to get oil and filters and they told me at 50 hours to change the engine oil and filter and the Hydraulic filter but not change the Hydraulic oil. The manual says to change the hydraulic oil but they said that would be a waste. So that is what I did. I have a 790.

My dealer did recommend changing the hydraulic fluid/filter at 50 hr even though the manual only calls for an engine oil/filter change. As the oil and filter was really not all that much compared to the cost of my 3320 I went ahead with the hydraulic oil/filter change.

When I pulled the hydraulic filter I was surprised at the number of metal shavings, left over from when castings were milled and drilled. So I do not feel that time and money were wasted by following the dealer's advice.

There have been a number of other posts about the 50 hour service for the 2520 here on TBN. One fellow stated that his dealer would do the service for $700 and change!!

Seem to recall that Orlo felt the owner's manual required "ALL" the fluids (including the anti-freeze) needed to be changed at 50 hours.

I thought that was a "bit-over-the-top" so, I asked one of the neighbors to look it up in his manual. The manual states that oil, filter, hyd fluid, hyd filter and sump filter cleaned at 50 hours. Nothing about the coolant.

The filter and hyd fluid (4 gallons) adds about $85 to the cost if you do it yourself. Not that much, but is it really all that necessary after only 50 hours?!?

If it were my machine; I'd change the engine oil and filter and the hyd filter. Change the hyd fluid at 200 hrs.

Hi pkav32,

I'd suggest changing the engine oil & filter, transmission/hydraulic oil & filter, and clean the transmission/hydraulic oil screen at the 50 hour interval. I just did mine on my JD2305 and there were substantial metal shavings on the transmission/hydraulic oil screen. The screen on my JD2305 has four magnets to help capture the metal shavings. You really want to get those metal shavings out.

The quote to have my local Deere location perform the service was ~ $300. I purchased the parts for about $122 and did the service myself. The parts for the JD2305 included 2 JD filters (oil and transmission/hydraulic), 4 quarts of JD oil, and 4 gallons of JD transmission/hydraulic oil.

It wasn't too hard to complete; removal of the screen was the most difficult, however I could perform the tasks much faster after going through the process once.

If you search TBN for "2520 50 hour", "2520 oil change", or "2520 transmission", etc., there are several posts. This is what I did for my JD2305 and found out many tip and tricks on doing the 50 hour service myself. Hope this helps!

Wow. There is a lot of difference in these machines recommended 50 hour service and what is recommended on the 110TLB.

What did you do on your 110 for a 50 hour service?

Not to get too far off track... I changed the oil, oil filter, hydraulic "charge" filter (small one) and the hydraulic "sump" filter (big one). I did not clean the sump screen filter or change out the hyd oil.

There were some metal filings in both hyd filters. That's what they're for... The sump screen filter is a much larger mesh and therefore only traps the larger particles. But, to clean it - you have to drain the entire transmission/hydraulic system.

Ten gallons on the 110!

I decided to change the hydraulic "charge" filter every time I change the engine oil-filter (200 hrs.), too. I used to do that with my JD 970 TLB, too.

Just did my 250hr service a couple of weeks ago. The hyd filter had some very fine particles again. Nothing alarming and very similar to what I saw with the 970. The hyd oil will be changed at 400hrs per the manual.
