kubota m7040/ jd 2155
Ok, I have run my m7040 about 50 hrs, the manuel says to change engine oil and hyd oil and filters, my salesman says to only change the filters on the hyd oil and catch what escapes during the change, in a clean bucket and pour back in. The only problem with this is being able to keep the fluid completely clean. This will bug me and seems would be almost as well to go like 100 hrs plus, and change completely. What do others do, I am new to Kubota, being an old jd user. The hyd fluid is pretty expensive but I dont want to put contaminated fluid back in, this would defeat the purpose. What do youall do?

Do a search on 50 hour service, there have been a lot of discussions about reusing or replacing the fluid at the 50 hour service.
For me there was no question about reusing the fluid, I'm not about to chance putting any dirt back into the hydraulic system on something this expensive. I replaced the fluid with the filters.

Fluid and filters are about the cheapest thing you can do for your tractor. Risking damage isn't worth the cost.

After changing my deere at the first 50 hour mark, there was no question that I was replacing the fluid. Honestly it was so bad I am changing it again after 20 more hours.

the 1st 50 hr change imho is crucial. your initial investment was big. protect your asset by replacing with all new fluids/filters. my understanding is that the initial change also takes care of any casting residue in the manufacturing process. just get big containers for the hydraulics, and a good method of getting the new fluids back in. northern tool has a number of inexpensive manual pumps that adapt to 5 gal containers. go with udt original fluid on the hyd. (some go w/sudt but i think overkill unless you're up in the extreme northern latitude). i can't imagine capturing the original fluids for a refill no matter how careful you are.... again, just imho.

You just bought a $40,000 tractor and are concerned about a $200 hydraulic fluid change that will last another 600 hours or so.

Maybe the filters only can be changed at 300 hrs per the manual but the first 50 hr change is going to be like the first wash stage in a dishwasher. All of the crud will be suspended regardless of the appearance.

Will your tractor be ruined if you just do the filters - most probably not. But I did filters and fluids at 50 hrs and every 300 hrs thereafter. I sleep well at night, use my tractor hard, and don't have to ask about fluid changes on TBN.

My manual says trans filter at 50 and trans fluid at 400.

At 50 hrs, I did engine oil and filter, trans filter and New SUDT to top off trans, only took a quart and a half.

I have a GST and I changed all my fluids and filters at 50 hrs. Fluid looked like brand new and hardly any metal on the magnet. Cost a few bucks for the sudt but piece of mind was priceless..

On the bx it says just to change the filter. I can't remember about the L4240. If you reuse the fluid I would run it through a paint strainer. Be sure you have a extremely clean bucket or pan to catch it in. If you decide to not change the fluid I would get something in writing from the dealer saying it is okay to just change the filter in case you would have a warranty issue.

What does your manual say? change the fluid or not.

For the bx it says just to change the filter, I can't remember on the L4240, I'll have to look it up. I had a guy that work on tractors tell me that the kubota super udt was one the best hydraulic oils out there.

If it says to just change the filter well then just change the filter. No big deal.

Are you even reading what has been posted in this thread????? Look at the first post first sentence. I think they may have changed it to where you don't have to change the fluid but i don't know if the manuals were updated. I know a guy who has a Mahindra and his dealer told him since the fluid looked clean he did not have to change it.

I just found this on Kubota's website. The second one down is the hyd. oil, it says 50 hours but that is a general chart and it also says to consult the owners manual for your specific model.

Probably the most popular question on TBN.:)
I bought my first Kubota about 10 years ago and did my service per owners manual. At that time everything was changed at 50 hours.
I continued buying Kubotas and with each new Kubota I got a new owners manual. I followed the owners manual. Well a few years ago the owners manual changed their recommendations. Interesting the info from uninformed owners or watchers as to why the manual changed. Some said misprint. Some said Kubota wanted their tractors to tear up sooner and other stupid reasons.
I contacted Kubota and rec'd the following email from the company.

John, the person or persons from TBN do not know what they are talking
about. There has not been a Service Bulletin or even a notice sent to the
dealers that this is a mistake in the Operators manual. Kubota Tractor
recommends for you to follow your Operators manuals for servicing of each
unit you have. The BX2660 and the BX25 do not have to have the transmission
fluid change until it reaches the 400 hour mark. For the F2680, it is the
200 hour mark. The transmission oil filters need to be replaced and the
suction strainers cleaned at or before the 50 hour mark for all three
units. Your selling dealer can also assist you if you have any questions in
regard to servicing your tractors. Thank you for purchasing and contacting
Kubota Tractor Corp..
Now some people resent that I keep posting this response from the Company that manuf the tractors but it's still their response.
I change mine just like it says at 50 hours and work them when I own them and sleep good at night.
I like the answer from the poster that does his every 20 hours and don't know why he waits that long and doesn't do it at 10 or even 5 hours. The cost of the tractor vs a couple hundred dollars just to be sure and be able to sleep at night is ........well, you know.
Do what you want, it's your tractor and your money and your sleeping habits.

is it possible that along with tier 4 and to comply with other "green" environmental pressures, Kubota now recommends less frequent oil changes. or in your opinion is the owners manual is the mechanical bible for every machine? just a thought
