I have average skills, do all my own car work
I know the oil change is straight forward what about the transmission and filter
Anything I should watch out for , any "gotchas"? (other than a big used oil container!)
Do I have to take the MMM off ?

Yes you can, and yes, you probably want to take the MMM off. If the MMM is a challenge for you, then I will change my suggestion and say "Don't do it" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You should have no problems if you do your own car work.
The hydraulic fluid/filter change is pretty straight forward. The only hard part is removing the hose that has the filter screen in it that should be cleaned. It is a short stiff hose - takes some patience getting it off.
One place where I screwed up when I did mine....when I removed the hydraulic filter, I didn't pay attention to the filter gasket. It had stayed on the transmission when I removed the filter. I spun the new filter on, and had a leak when I started adding fluid. I had two gaskets (o-rings) on at the same time.

Don't know where your are, or if pricing there is anything like good old CT, but I decided to have my dealer do the 50 hr, for peace of mind and to put on Gator blades and load the rear tires at the same time. I didn't ask how much, and the bill came to: $592.43! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif If you're wondering, here is the break-down:

3 Qts 15-40 Plus 50 Oil = $8.97
4 Gals Low Vis Hy-Gard = $43.80
1 Oil Filter = $6.59
1 Hydro Filter = $25.29
1 Fuel Filter Element = $4.01
3 Gator Blades = $48.84 + $5.95 Freight
20 Gals of RimGuard = $118.00
1 Shop Supplies = $4.95
3.9 Hours Shop Labor = $292.50
The rest was CT tax (6%)

Even though I was surprised with the total, I would probably have the dealer do the first service again (In retrospect, I would have negotiated it into the purchase price), but I'll do the rest of the servicing from now on myself. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I did mine on my 4010. Reported on it in another thread on this forum site.

Oil filter on the 4010 requires a chain wrench to snake up behind the frame and over the filter to get it off.

Hydraulic filter on the 4010 is behind the long pin that holds the 3 pt in place. Had to remove a rear wheel to get the pin out of the way.

Gotta remove MMM to get to the grease zerks underneath.

Couldn't get to the ring holding the fuel filter on the 4010. Had to remove the 12mm bolt so the filter assembly could be rotated up out of the way of hydraulic line attachment point for the FEL to get to the ring.

Looking at your figures:
Without the extra's, your bill would have been around $100 for oil and parts and estimate another $100 for labor, just for the 50 hour service. Saving the $100 labor if doing it yourself.

At first look that $592 seemed expensive for a 50-hour service. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Do it yourself. Buy all of the parts & oil from Deere. The MMM needs to come off (doesn't have to but extremely simplifies the transmission portion of the project). You need to learn how to remove the MMM anyhow for cleaning, blade replacement, etc. The engine oil & filter is very straight forward, all though the filter is very small in diameter which required me to purchase a cap type oil filter wrench from Walmart (see inset of attachment). The most difficult part, like someone stated eariler, is removing the suction screen tube. I fought with it for ~ twenty minutes and then followed the tube up to where it bolts to the top of the unit (see attachment). Remove those three bolts (part #20 in picture) accessed from atop of the rear tire and it allows you to get things apart in like two minutes. Just remember to have container(s) available to hold the 3+ gallons of hydro fluid. Also, the hydro fluid you drain will be red-ish (like auto trans fluid) and the new will be gold-ish (like engine oil).

Parts & fuilds should cost under $100.00

Actually I think you can cut that down a bit ever further. I think I paid around $36 for a 5 gallon bucket of the Lo Vis Hy-Gard. Also, I've never been able to get any more than 2 qts. of oil in the engine. The Specs say 2.2 qts.

One thing that no one has touched on (again) is the "better" way to remove the hydraulic tube. You could do a search on 50 hour service for the 2210 for more detailed descriptions, but basically you remove the tube at the top, where it attaches to the tranny. Take out the 3 socket head cap screws that attach it from the tranny, then the hose below will be alot easier to remove/replace.

OK now I need help. The service guy told me to change the tranny filter only, not to drain the whole system (hydrolic fluid) until 100-150 hours. It is not break in oil in the hydrolics only in the engine.
