Tiller 5' vs 6' KK Tiller

I have a IH 384 tractor (39 HP at PTO). It works very well but is very used. I would like to purchase a 6' KK tiller but worried that it may be too much for my tractor. The manual states 35-50 HP. I till about 6 acres twice a year in sand/loam/clay soil with no rocks but many roots. What do ya'll think?

I would think the 6' would be alright, we run a 5' Farm King behind our Kubota B2400 (24 gross HP) and it works. If you get into some heavy duty hard stuff it works hard, but have never had it drop by more than 200rpm on the tach.

I've ran my KK II 6'er behind various tractors from a high of 65 hp to a low of 33. The tiller never flinched. The 33 hp tractor (1957 MF50 gas) labored but made it through 1/2 acre of hard clay. (dads garden) The deciding factor is, how low of a 1st gear do you have?

Get the 6' tiller. If it turns out it is too big, you simply take off tines. If you get the 5' tiller, you are stuck with what you have. I have a 6' KK and love it.

Thanks for the remarks. I have a very low, low first gear and I like the idea about removing a row or two of tines if necessary. Could also till shallow and just work deeper on successive passes if necessary. Thanks for reinforcing my first choice.

The other thing you can do...only till half-depth for the first pass...Your 39PTO HP can handle that for sure...Don't have to fiddle with the tinges or anything...
