5\' or 6\' king kutter rotary mower

Hello everyone, this is my first post, but I am a long time lurker, great site with wonderful information.

First, Local TSC has a 5' King Kutter rotary mower for $650 which is only $25 higher than the 4' model. The 6' model is $850. Why is the price difference so large between the 5' and 6'??

Second, the 5' unit will cover the area between the inside of the rear tires, the 6' unit will make it to the middle of the rear tires.

Which one would you buy???? I am probably making this harder than it needs to be, but I just do a lot of thinking before I
take any action.

Thanks a lot for your help!!

If you have enough HP to run 6', then that would be what I got. JC

I am guessing the 6' has a heavier duty gear box as part of the cost diff.
I would go with the 6'. My 6' is slightly wider than the outside of my tires making it easy to mow up against fences, trees, buildings, etc.

Re: 5\' or 6\' king kutter rotary mower

6' only makes it to the middle of the rear tires? You must have a pretty big tractor and not one of the 24-33HP models that most TBN'ers have. Your outer tire track must be over 7', maybe 8' That sure sounds like you can handle the bigger unit. How much HP do you have? Make sure the gearbox rating will handle your PTO output. KK has different gearbox ratings on the models. The only advantage to buying a smaller one would be if you have tight areas where you might be backing the cutter between trees, poles, between fenceposts, etc. and 6' would be too big. For open field mowing, the bigger the better to save time.

For me a number of things would come into the equation. If I have the PTO power, am cutting open fields, have enough trailer to haul it and the price wasn’t too much I would go with the 6’ unit. If I was buying to clear over grown areas, cut saplings, needed maneuverability the 5’ unit would be my choice. If clearing were the goal and I could swing the price I would also move up to a medium duty cutter for clearing.

Always buy a mower the same width or wider than the outside of the tires. Otherwise you can never mow up against fences and when mowing rows you will have flattened some of the grass twice with the tractor tires before ever mowing it.

I have a 5' and it just barely covers the wheel path. The prices you quote for the 5' are good though. Bes ure to consider adding a slip clutch.

I have a 6' that will not get out past my back tires. I drives my crazy. I am shopping for the badist 7' foot I can abuse now. I like the Modern brand. It is no were near $ 850.00. You pay dear for that extra foot and big gearbox. I have dealt with my 6' for 5 years. I want something that is out past my tire. I was looking at an 8' 3pt till I saw what the extra 2 gearboxes added. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I go through the same with my 48". It's about the same width as my tractor and I can't get up close to anything! I know a five foot will work on my tractor for what I do the most, but would just have to take a little less bite for tougher cutting situations.

Re: 5\' or 6\' king kutter rotary mower

al_fol:

I had the same question when I purchased my rotary cutter. I could have paid around $150 more for the 6' one, but I went with the 5' one primarily for the cost.

I'm glad I did. The 5' one is the same width of my tires. I do a TON of cutting in woods and areas with a lot of small trees that have grown wild. I want to keep some of those smaller trees and the 5' one lets me drive through the trees and be reasonably sure I won't cut down those trees that I want to keep (I have made some stupid quick turns and swung the cutter out, nicking or running over trees I didn't mean to cut).

With that said, I do wish I had a wider one for the fields I cut. Although I get a lot of fun seat time with the smaller one!

Good luck.

Re: 5\' or 6\' king kutter rotary mower

How many blades on the 6' one? May account for the difference in price. I have a 72" MMM on my 3320. I can appreciate the slightly wider than tractor footprint. Makes it easy to gauge the mowing line. Account for turns when factoring size. PTO HP requirements are most important!
