5 ft. tiller that does not run on 540 pto ??????

ASAE standard is 1000 pto rpm = 21 spline, 540 pto rpm = 6 spline.

That's the std. NOW, but many of those old compacts were/are grey market tractors that were imported by anyone who thought they could sell them...

I've seen quite a few of them, over the years...

But what about the tiller? Do you think it was specifically manufactured for one of these tractors since its only a 5 foot tiller and supposedly has to run at more than 540pto? It doesn't look to be really old unless it was really taken care of. Doesn't look new by any stretch of the imagination but it still has decent paint on it.

For what it's worth, I usually run my tiller at much less than the rated 540 RPM. I'm usually just not in that big of a hurry but also, since the tractor is hydro, I can reduce groundspeed to match the lower tiller RPM.

I usually tilled with the L2550 and I ran it about 2000 rpm, but on that tractor that isn't far from pto rated speed. It was a geared tractor, but 1st gear crawls along.

The earliest and smallest Kubotas imported here had the reverse-turning PTO and proprietary tiller. Little garden-tractor size rigs. Then everything after version 1.0 of that first model was standard.

Satoh or one of the other early brands of small tractors imported in the 70's also used that reverse standard.

My US-version Yanmar, late 70's design, has a shifter to send 540 or 1000 rpm out the (standard spline) pto. The nearly identical Japan-market Yanmar has a 3 speed pto shifter, 540 plus maybe 750 and 1050, driving a standard pto output shaft.

And I have the gray-market import Yanmar tiller (RS1400) that was standard for the Japanese Yanmar. I never use my 1000 rpm gear to drive it. I suspect the higher tiller speeds were for churning rice paddy muck, not for tilling garden soil like we do here. I tried a second pass using 1000 rpm and it turns soil into flour, not useful as far as I can see.

I wouldn't buy anything non-standard unless maybe it is a complete kit including all the implements. Today you would never find the unique implements since few were imported back in the day 40 years ago and I doubt they turn up often, now, for sale.

What's the model on that tiller you found?
