5 ft. tiller that does not run on 540 pto ??????

Anyone every heard of this? I found a 5 ft. tiller for $400 but the guy said it needs something faster than a 540. Said it would be great for an older Kubota. What was different about the older Kubota? Seems I recall seeing older smaller tractors that had a 540-750-1000 that's the only thing I can think of, maybe this was designed for one of those tractors, but usually the higher rpm pto requirements are on larger equipment. Anyway I was thinking this would be nice to till my garden this spring until I found out this tidbit of info. Anyone/everyone feel free to chime in.

Not sure what he's talking about. My M9540 has dual speed PTO 540/1000. To change I must swap the output shaft. Spline count is much different. My JD brush cutter is 1000 rpm. My Post Hole Digger is 540. Can't interchange them because of the different spline count on the implement PTO shaft.

So if the tiller is meant to run on 1000 rpm PTO it should have the fine spline count, 21 I believe. If it is truly a 1000 rpm unit, your 540 rpm PTO tractor will not turn it fast enough to be effective even if the PTO shaft will hook up.

Other than the spline count on the PTO shaft I'm afraid I don't know how to guide you to determine what it is without using it???

Like I said earlier I thought anything over 540 was for larger equipment. Unless this was special made for one of those older PTO's with multi speed, I am a little confused about it.

My Kubota B9200HSD has a single output shaft but two speeds including 540 and approximately 700.

Edit: I see in looking at the specs that it's actually 748 RPM on the high speed.

Another thing to consider. If the difference in PTO speeds as described by npalen is that insignificant couldn't the tractor equipped with 540 PTO speed only simply be ran at wide open engine speed to get the necessary 700 PTO speed?? Just guessing here since I don't know at what engine rpm your tractor runs to get 540.

If the difference was 540 versus 1000 I don't think it would be possible to overcome.
