4x4 Pick up truck vs. tractor?

In other words which would be better for freeing a stuck vehicle, usually slow and steady wins the race but some times it takes more momentum and jerking to free something, usually when something is really stuck that's what it comes down to as opposed to just steady tugging, right?

Got my Ford 3/4 powerstroke stuck this week, and I mean really stuck in the muck. Used my DX45 and a recovery rope to pull it out. Took several good tugs to break her loose from the holes I dug, after that slow and steady took over.

Since a 1/2 ton pickup may typically weigh 4500 to 5000 lbs empty, I would say the pickup would out pull the 3000 lb tractor like my 2520 with FEL and Rear blade. But, if it was my (43 HP) 110 weighing in at near 7800 lbs, then the tractor will out pull the truck. Doesn't matter the HP, the torque must overcome the weight and traction.

I would guess truck due to the higher hp and weight, I know it's all about traction so results would vary along with surface conditions, tires etc. but I would think under most conditions the truck would overwhelm a CUT that size, now a 75 HP tractor would be another storey.

Horsepower and weight don't mean as much as gearing. I can take a 20hp engine and yank around a heavier vehicle with more power if it has taller gearing than the 20hp vehicle. If you need an example, put two of the exact same trucks bumper to bumper, one in 4x4 HIGH and the other in 4x4 LOW and see which pulls which.

I got my F-350 dually dump plow truck stuck in a snow banking and tried to pull it out with a 1-ton Chevy dump with no luck, hooked up the little CK20 to it, 4x4 low-range with the rear diff locked and slowly pulled it right out.

In my experience with trucks in dirt they will usually both just dig holes and neither truck will move, sometimes they will barely come out of the holes they dug after you un hook the chain. Tractors are designed to pull things though, so they have an advantage. Maybe I'll try it sometime lol...
.1*Take note.... chains that break under tension can kill you! Straps are alot safer

That's another factor are they hitched solid or is there some slack that the faster moving truck could take advantage of.

Just the opposite. If a chain breaks, it falls. If a strap breaks, it goes flying. The most dangerous though, is a cable. Then a rope. Then a strap. Then comes a chain. Chains can do damage, but are to heavy to be flung, so they just fall to the ground.

There was a guy around here a few yrs back who was killed. He and some buddys were 4x4ing. He was trying to pull a truck out of the mud and the chain broke, it came through the back window and hit him in the head. Very sad, he was just out having some fun and never made it home

Well, they're all dangerous. Just some more dangerous than others.

Really! So, take a 500 lb 20HP garden tractor with low gearing and pull it against a school bus in high range. Which will win a pull off.

I think the School bus won't even notice the tractor...
