Hi. I have owned my DS4110 for a year now and been pretty pleased with it ( switch problems, dealer made right) but I am so frustrated with it now I am not sure I want to keep it. It has been hard to put in 4 wheel drive since I got it but now it is almost impossible to do so. The dealer suggested using the bucket to get the front wheels off ground and rock it. That worked for a while, but that doesn't even help any more. Looking for suggestions on how to put in and take out of 4 wheel drive. Thanks Hope this is how to post something have never done it, usally can find someone else post to solve my problems.. VERY helpful site :)

That tractor is notorious for being difficult to engage the 4wd. I would almost say everyone we have sold is difficult until you figure out the procedure. Try this and your issues should go away.

First take a can of your favorite lubricant - for this I use pb blaster. Spray all the linkage LIBERALLY. The shaft that engages the 4wd runs through the transmission case and is dry (not lubricated, use a lot of penetrating lube!). If you wash it regularly or have run in mud water can seep in between shaft and transmission and make it difficult to shift.

Now for shifting while operating. Whatever gear you choose is OK not fast, at idle is good. We typically find forward or reverse is OK to engage 4wd. Drive forward pulling up on 4wd lever, steer easily left or right and it will engage. At that moment it is perfect position. Work in and out lubricate liberally and in time it will become loose.

Perfect mesh is hard to come by on a new tractor - don't fear, it will get better.

Push down engages, pull up disengages 4wd. Don't forget to steer a little.

Update on the 4 wheel drive..Your input was of great help..Sprayed all linkage with PB ..and turned wheels while trying to engage, it took a few minutes but did go in..mowed field/swamp.. disengaged.. was a real pain to reengage  used bucket to lift front end, drove slowing turning wheels, forward reverse..finally it went in.. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process and it "getting better" ..4 wheel drive is an important feature where I use my tractor..

My DS4510 4WD change was a bit tight when new but , as I stay in 4WD all the time , it didn't concern me too much. I changed to 2WD a couple of times over the first 100hrs , just to give the shaft some use , but haven't changed to 2WD at all for around 200hrs.

Tested it after reading this thread and it was pretty stiff so, as suggested by Tony at LaVoie , I've given the linkage a good spray with WD40 this afternoon.

Something else to put on the maintenance schedule

The only way is to take linkage off shaft that is in transmission and hose down with pb rotate linkage with pliers. When you get free enough you will know. Maybe a 30 min process. Sorry you are having problem. Your dealer can address this if still under warranty. I would.

I will give dealer a call. They have been very helpful. The problem is I can not get the tractor to a road to haul it untill the "road/path" from where I use tractor to house drys out.. :)( steep and lots of clay). Will it damage the tractor to leave it in four wheel drive all the time. Never on pavement..almost never in high range

No. It hurts nothing to run it in 4wd. Some people choose to always run in 4wd. Downside is some parts may wear faster because 4wd requires more parts to move than 2wd.

No, running a tractor in 4wd all the time on loose surfaces will not hurt your tractor. All the moving parts while operating in 2wd operate/spin while in 4wd. 4wd lever only engages front axle shaft so they will have power from the engine. STAY OFF ASPHALT. You will pop your ring gear off your differential.

These tractors are not like the old 4wd trucks that disengage the hub and the transfer case gears. They are like your truck today that have constant spinning transfer cases, driveshafts and locked hubs.
