Question about my 4wd caseih jx95 tractor. When I turn the steering and let go, the wheels turn back a little in a jerky motion towards the straight position. The wheels only go back a little, they don't go all the way to the straight position. They don't jerk back when I hold the steering wheel. Any ideas on the cause?

Thanks,

Sam

Does it do it in 2wd, or in 4wd in really slippery muck? My new NH TC30 does it in 4wd on grippy surfaces (dry gravel driveway, etc.), but doesn't in 2wd or in the mud. I think it's just the front wheels grabbing the surface you're driving on if it's grippy.

dry surface - grass mostly. It's in 2wd, I only put it in fwd if I have slippage problems.

Has it always done this, or only recently? If recently, you may be in need of maintenance. Otherwise, it's likely attributable to u-joints. A u-joint doesn't rotate smoothly, but "pulses." The farther off-center, the stronger the pulse. When off-center, u-joint yokes have to accelerate on the outside and decelerate on the inside of the circle. This causes that pulsing sensation felt in the steering wheel of 4WD machines that use simple u-joints in the steering axle. It was very noticeable on my old low-tech Kubota B6000, non-existent on my BX24 (no u-joints in axle).

My Yanmar started doing this when I flipped the front wheels into the wider position. Put them back and it was normal again.
