I started up my 8n the other day only to find that there are two small pin holes in the block. The holes are directly behind the starter in an area that appears to be a casting mark. I am assuming that the block was a bit thinner at this point and has rusted through. Has anyone run into this issue before? Also, if anyone has any ideas on the best way to repair this, please let me know.

Try JB weld.

I am assuming it is just leaking a little coolant??

You could try cleaning it up a bit and JB welding it, and keep an eye on it. Welding it is another option, as is drilling and plugging it.

Got any pictures.

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes, just a bit of coolant. A steady drip. No pictures as I am techno challenged but I'll see if I can get some with a little help. How does the "drilling and plugging" work?

try the JB weld before you drill.

Yea, I would try JB first.

Also, be sure that it is indeed rust holes and not a small crack. If it is a small crack, a tiny drillbit and drill each end of the crack then JB weld.

There are a few different methods of drilling and plugging. Tapered plugs, or threaded plugs with sealant. But it dont sound like you have much meat (thickness) in that area and may not work well.

Personally, if it were mine, I'd pull the starter off, clean things up well, and put a little "tack weld" on each of the rust holes (if thats what they are) with a bit of nickle rod.

Also, I wouldnt buy the quick setting stuff. Never had much luck with it on anything. It isnt as strong.

Behind the starter there's a freeze or welch plug are you sure that's not what is leaking?

I was wondering if it was some sort of freeze plug, but hadn't ever seen one like that. Round, about the size of a silver dollar? Doesn't appear to have any threads though and no clear way to remove it, so I just assumed it was a casting mark. I'm sure it's not a crack. Two little pin holes. How in the world do you replace it???
