iam thinking about buying a 4840 row croptractor, i have been told the transmission is real jerky with the power shift, one guy said to shift from 7 to 8 or vice versa he uses the clutch, has anybody else had that problem, how about transmission rear end ,or broke any thing else. maybe i should buy a 4640 instead, it only weighs 600 lbs less, and one could turn it up to 180 horsepower, and then i could have the power quad tranission which i really like.thanks

Well there is certainly a large jump in speed from 7th to 8th gear with an 80% increase is speed (from10mph to 18mpn). The only 8 speed powershifts I have used recently were in the 210LE landscape loader. In the lower gears it was smooth, never used the 8th gear though.
I never noticed the 4840 did not have a quad range available as the 4640 has. I can easily see the benefits of choosing the 4640 as you suggested. But that is just my inexperienced opinion as I have only had one tractor in that size which was a Case 1370 with a 12 speed.

Actually the 4640 doesn't have a Power-quad trans but a Quad-range.Similar but different as a Quad-range can only be shifted through 4 gears on the move and to shift ranges it supposed to be stopped. I think a Power-quad can be shifted through all gears on the move. I also think there is an adjustment on the firmness of shifting on a 4840 PS

The 8 speed powershift in the 20, 30 and 40 series were jerky. This due to the jump in speed between some of the gears. 6, 7 & 8 were large jumps so the tractors I drove would jerk.
The quad-range was the other trans used in the 30, 40, 50 and 55 series. These were 4 gears with 4 ranges, 2 reverse. You could toggle between 1-2, 3-4, & 1R-2R. Ranges you were suppose to stop, but could shift on the fly if you were careful.
The issue with the powershift models wasn't breaking axles or rear ends. The issue was if it wasn't taken care of it could cost well over $10000.00 to fix should something go wrong with the trans. 8-10000 hours was probably average life for that trans. Some less, some much more, again care and service were key.
