I suspect you will need to remove the shafts to change the bearings but the tillers are listed when you enter 448 in JD parts look up. Here's the diagrams on the 40 and 448.

Looking at second picture (on the right) that collar on the shaft is the lock collar to hold bearing tight to shaft. There should be a set screw on too loosen thne rotate that collar to loosen the bearing. Remove the 4 bolts in the flange plate and bearing will come out. If your lucky there will still be a number on the outer bearing race and you can use that number get new bearing at most any Auto parts or implement shop.

What causes this? Simple.... lack of lubrication. They are non-servicable sealed bearings, so it's not your fault. Nothing lasts forever.

In theory, they're easy to replace. Remove the flange bolts and flange, loosen the eccentric locking collar, remove the bearing. Assembly is the reverse order. I've replaced this type of bearing many times, and if the bearing or the locking collar is rusted or stuck to the shaft, you can have a real fight on your hands.

do i need to press them on or are they fit in place?

They are slip fit, not press fit.

These are called self-aligning bearings. You can usually find them, the locking collars and the retaining flanges at your local farm supply type store at a fraction of the cost of getting them from the dealer.
