4720 and 400x Loader

I have heard that a CUT tractor will not lift a pallet of sod. Can the 4720 with the 400x loader handle a pallet of sod, typically around 2200 - 2500 lbs? The salesman at the local dealer here said it could, but I just wanted to check before I pulled the trigger. I need something to move pallets off of a semi flat bed and my 20 ft equipment trailer. I couldn't find the specs on the 400x loader.

What I would do is get the salesman to loan that tractor to you to move some pallets of sod. That way you both will know the answer. Getting the right ballast on the rear will be the important thing. I would have guessed a pallet of sod weighs more than 2500 pounds, but it would have been just a guess.
The 3pt lift on the 4720 is around 2500 pounds so the FEL may not be that much.

Lifting off a flat bed trailer that is 4' or more off the ground may be a challenge. You'll definitely want a ballast box AND filled tires.
As BeenThere mentioned in his reply, you'll want to do this trial at the dealer's. If you can pick up a pallet of sod and raise it 5' or so (with no stability problems), you should be OK.
If this works, I reckon it's pretty obvious you'll want to do any loading/unloading of those pallets on a level surface.

I have a 4720 with a 400x and love it. I agree that loaded tires and a ballast box would be a good idea (more like a must).

Good specs!

Looks like there's just enough capacity for the pallets of sod.
This loader will be used to the limit though...caution is advised.

I suggest you inflate your front tires to the maximum for this usage..

Sorry to be the bad guy, but that spec is at the pivot pins. 500mm forward should be about 1657lbs; (30% less). Much of this load will be even farther forward. Plus you need to subtract the weight of your forks....

These specs will be on a fully ballasted machine. I am thinking that you will be needing a Utility machine to cover this load.

I have yet to see anyone need to lift a full pallet of sod over 5 feet in the air?I have lifted off pallets of aluminum that are at or a little more than 2650 lbs off of the flat bed trucks that deliver to me and the 400 CX seem to handle it well /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What is the difference between a 400x and a 400CX? I do not see a 400CX listed.

Sorry its the X not the CX , The CX is self leveling if I remember correctly.

At this time, Deere doesn't list a 400CX loader...just the 400X. There are 200CX and 300CX (and the corresponding 200X and 300X).

I suppose someone may have assumed there is a 400CX since there are CX models for the other loaders.

Of course, the Deere web site may not be up to date...
