I have a JD 4700 that has started leaking oil from the front of the motor (Seal). Has any had this problem and how bad is it to repair?
thanks

Re: 4710 Leaking Oil from front of motor

Sorry it is a JD 4710 not a 4700

If sure it is the front seal, then I'd suggest getting the tech manual if doing it yourself (if no prior experience with seals).
If not sure, then look for a leaking valve cover seal (it happens).

Here is what the 4700 TM says about the seal. I'd expect the 4710 to be very similar.

And second shows removal of timing gear cover first (I suspect to get the seal out).

I think you can too. And would like to see some dialogue and series of pics as you proceed through the job. That would make a great thread to add to the TBN collection archives.

AJT, probably is the Front Main Seal. I have a 4700 with 5600+ hrs. on it and around 4000 hrs. I had to replace mine. It is an easy fix, just time consuming. It's easiest if you remove the Rad, oil cooler, fan, not a lot of room in there for fingers. While you're in there you should check the steering hoses on top of the pumpkin for wear, cause you have to pull the same things too get to them.

Wow, 5600+ hours! What is the overall condition? I have a 4700 as well that I bought new back in March 2000. Got 1249 hours on it now. Runs like a top, and I have worked it hard over the years, even harder in the last 4 months since I got a W.R. Long RBG-60 grapple and cleared about 20 acres of slash in hilly terrain after the loggers got done.

I paid, are you guys ready for this, $21,100 for it brand new with the 12F/12R PowrReverser and R4 tires. Ah, those were the days...

I have been very impressed with how this CUT has held up over the years given everything I have subjected it to. I have always been religious about doing the preventive maintenance, which I'm a firm believer in.

Just curious, how many miles on your 4710, and what have you been using it for?

How would you calculate miles?

I would say good condition. I have taken very good care of the maintenance. At 250 engine hrs. I started using Delvac 1 by Mobil for engine oil. It starts better with very little black smoke than My brand new Kubota M59 with a lot of white smoke. The key is using the machine, sitting is detriment to them. I have a little landscape/construction business and rental properties that keeps it going.

To Beenthere, approximately 40 miles equals 1-hr on a diesel engine. Of coarse that is different with diff. types of application but it is an industry average.
