X728
greetings,

i am shopping for a x728 this week. i am torn between the 2 sizes of snowthrower.
for the smaller, it seems that i will be driving over the edges of the cleared track with the rear wheels if the path is not perfectly straight. width and track are close.
with the larger, will the 728 handle it OK?

any experiences you are willing to share?

thank you,
geek

I have the 728 with a 47 an it worked great. Did a little running over but no biggie since the unit has down pressure. Also if you get in big deep snow the tractor will throw better with a 47. Just my .02

You can always take less than a full pass with the larger blower and for most snow you will appreciate the larger blower being wider than the tractor wheels. Plus with a hydro tractor you can travel whatever speed is required to do the job.

If you have a lot of drifts where the snow is wind packed, stick with the 47". Sure, you can take smaller bites but the first path has to be 47" and my 2305 with it's 4-wheel drive, Curtis hard cab and ballast box has to work at drifts like this.

If you do any sidewalks, stick with the 47" so the snow blower feet will stay on the concrete.

Gravel driveway? Get the 47"

If most of your snow is the light fluffy kind, and it is on a solid flat level surface, go with the 54"

I have a 47" and do short drives. Works well in tight spaces. Having a wider tractor (Deere 4100) isn't an issue because it is hard to do a 47" cut anyway because the snow will fall to the side, a problem with any size two stage Deere blower. My 4100 wouldn't have enough power for a bigger blower.

I have a X740 and have been running a 47" for a lot of years with various JD's. If you get much snow at all, the 47" will hog down the tractor to where you are only moving ahead at 1/2 MPH and the tractor is really working. I never had any problem with tires running up on uncut snow.

In my opinion, anything bigger than 47" will work with lighter snow, but with much heavy snow, it will just slow you down more.
