1999 455 (2100 hrs plus) lawn tractor not starting (in cold weather) like it should. I'm thinking glow plugs maybe dirty or worn out. Does anybody know if they loose their heat value over time? Could I just take them out and clean them or should I replace them? Is it time to have the injector nozzles rebuilt?

I would put my money on glow plugs. They will burn out with time but you also want to make sure that you have 12 volt going to the plug first. If so the glow plug can be check using a ohm meter. Not familiar with the 455 but you may have to remove them for checking them.

They either work or not. Heating element doesn't get dirty like injector. Ohm meter will tell you if they are good, it will show a dead short, just like touching the leads together (0 ohms) if it is working. Injectors may need servicing but likely not the cause of starting. Even the dirtiest fouled injectors will usually start but not produce full power and or lots of black smoke (dirty air cleaner will do the same thing)

replace the glowplugs. I have a little perkins 2 cyl. on a genset and if I get a 1000-1500 hrs out of them i'm lucky
