Buying Advice 450 roll belt baler

good morning everyone, I am currently in a dilema, need a round baler to finish off this years hay, we have only made small squares for years and mainly for horses {timothy}. I have a 5040 kubota for a tractor, so hp is definitely a concern. my question is has anyone had anything to do with new hollands new 450 roll belt, Up here in Canada my dealer is asking around 20 g's
I may be around 300 to 500 bales a year, so not very much. I would appreciate any advice.tks Brian

well i dont know if $20,000 up there means the same un the US, but we sale the 450 for $18,500 and that has all options except for net wrap. as far the baler, it has been great. it is simple, easy to use, auto wrap, and makes some nice bales. go for it

You could also consider a good, clean, used baler. No more than you are going to use it, you could save a lot of money and still get years of service out of it.
I would suggest the JD 448. (or an older 447 or even a 446) Great little 4x4' roll. Minimum hp requirment is 45, and a 750 pound bale won't overload your tractor either.

I bought a NH 630 10 years ago to run 4x4 rounds in twine and I still use it for Amish rounds. It's not net nor is it autowrap but it's simple and rock solid dependable and I ran it with 40 PTO horsepower, no problem.

I keep it because 1, it's dependable, 2, it's paid for, 3 I have proprionic acid application on it and 4, it's a NH.

It's a nice alternative to the BR780 when the forage is slightly damp as I can turn on the acid and the in bale chamber sensors meter the amount I need with no guesswork. A real lifesaver..... with Greensaver....

I believe new, it was around 12K.

Hi, I bought a New Holland 450 baler on 6/10/2011 with net wrap from West Hills Tractor in Jonesborough, Tn. for $20500.00.I have put over 300 bales through it and it worked great. Its the best investment I have ever made. It made want to throw rocks at my John Deere 410 round baler. It cut my baling time in half. I would recomend this baler to any haying operation.

I have a DK50 and a 450 utility round baler and found out quick that I had too small of a tractor. I am pleased with the baler but would not recommend under 60 pto hp for this baler. If you have even the slightest incline it will pull you down to a very low speed and even on level ground it works the tractor too much I have had it hooked up to a 72hp ford and it did good tractor would still labor on thick hay at higher speeds.
I just hit 500 bales on the baler and am happy with it, one other suggestion is get the gathering wheels I didn't but after the first couple of feilds I was on the phone ordering them. Works great now no more missed hay can bale a smooth field at 8mph (hooked to a 103hp tractor) without worry of plugging up.

Kind of a big tractor for that small baler isnt it? 103hp........everyone that has one around here runs them with 75 down to 55hp with no problem.

I have used the 450 on a 4000 ford 3 cyl diesel rated at 52 hp and it worked great.

50 hp when the 4000 now is not like a 50 hp tractor now adays the 50 hp tractors now is like a ford 2000 size and light weight

PTO power is entirely dependent on ground speed. That is, a lower powered tractor can't attain a faster pickup speed when round bailing hay.

It's possible to even run our 700 series rounder with a 50 pto tractor but not efficiently.

On a smooth field, I want to run at 3mph ground speed with the 780. That takes some serious power and good torque rise. Even the 630 NH takes some power though not as much.

far as tractors are concerned, it's always better to go bigger than smaller.

Remember, the weight of the bailer (machine) is appreciably heavier loaded with a round bale, than enpty. A typical 4-4 is 800 pounds, a 4-5 is 1100-1300 and a 4-6 can be 1800 depending on bale compaction and type of forage. We regularly attain 1800 plus bailing clover over wheat straw.

At some point the machine becomes the controlling factor, if the tractor weight is too light. Something to ponder.
