I just purchased a new 45-40 tractor. I have been looking at how the seat is attached. I can not figure out how to remove it.

I want to see if I can make the seat tilt forward. This would provide some protection to the seat from rain and also allow me to shield the seat from the sun. Try sitting on a black seat here in Georgia in July, it will light up your life.

Any help would be appreciated. Pictures would be most helpful.

Don't know about yours but mine doesn't tilt. Maybe that's because its a spinner type for the backhoe. Maybe you could get it covered by an auto upholstery shop in something like the neoprene material they make wet suits from. I've torn mine already with the proverbial tools in the back pocket and found that the material isn't very rugged. To prevent further damage I stretched a T shirt over the back of the seat.

I finally figured out how to remove the seat on my 45-40. It is quite simple once you see how to do it. There are just 4 bolts holding it in, that and gravity. The assembly must weight 75 pounds. It took two people to pick it up and move it off the tractor, and put it back.ł

The four bolts are located at the front and back of the seat mount assembly. The ones at the front are obvious. They bolt two arms down to the tractor itself. The rear two are a little more complicated. They are at the back of the seat and can be seen by moving the seat all the way forward. They are located in two recesses in the seat mounting plates. The problem is that they are also located behind a cross member for the seat assembly.

Remove the three retainers on the rubber boot.

Slide the seat all the way forward.

Move the seat back about an inch and a half.

This should give you room for a socket to reach over the cross member and remove the bolts.

If you remove the rear bolts and loosen the front bolts, the seat will tilt up. The only problem is that the seat is so heavy it is very difficult move into the tilted position. Putting the seat in the tilted position would be something you might do when you are shutting down for the day, but not something you would do when you got off the tractor for only a minute or two.

Something else I noticed while working on the seat, all,of the parts of the seat and everything else on the tractor looks like it was cut out with an ax. Everything is very crudely made. Also, the welding looks like a Mud Dobber did it. I don't know, but all this does not inspire much confidence in the overall tractor. Perhaps I screwed up in this purchase.

You have purchased a solid, no nonsense, proven dependable tractor. I would not let the quality of seat material cuts, or the "mud dobber" seat metal welds discourage you. I am just wondering why you went to so much trouble just to tilt the seat out of the sun? Seems to me just covering it with something would be a lot easier. Since I am a native Texan I am completely familiar with black seats in the sun. That's why I sit on an old towel. Enjoy your new machine.

Gwaow, be careful getting off your tractor. I have a 4550 and got hurt pretty bad when I was getting off. I got up to climb down and had my left foot on the step. I had ahold of the grab bar and as I put my left foot on the step and picked my right foot up, my left foot slipped off the step and I came down against the metal strap that is welded to the step. It tore a hole in my shin down to the bone where you could see the tendons. They could not stitch it up so they packed it and put me on some strong antibiotics. It's been a week and I'm heading back to let the Dr. check it out. Seems to be healing. I went out and checked and that welded strap had a sharp edge on it. I like the tractor which I bought last Sept. When I was looking at it my biggest concern was how tight the operators area was. I think Mahindra could have designed a better non-slip step. But I learned a lesson to be extra careful getting on and off. Be careful out there Brother.

My 4540 sits in the southeast Texas sun daily and the only issue I have had with the seat was the drain clogged up with gunk. A wire with a flat curl on the top and eye on the bottom cured the clogging problem.
