I picked up the kit from my dealer today. ($150.00 out the door) Once I got home I started on the install and I was done in about 25 minutes. I was worried about drilling the hood, but it was no problem at all. The kit seems solidly built and I really like the look and functionality of the stack.

Can you post a picture, Chris?

I have looked into getting the kit for my 4600 in the past, but due to needing to cut the hood I've not done it. I would be curious to see what it looks like on yours.

Thanks!

If the 3x20 series is the same I have a complete install with pics, but the pics would not show on this post. If anyone wants a copy,PM me your email address and I email it to you.
Sincerely,

If you like the looks of the vertical exhaust it is a real simple install. The reasons I opted for it is because:1) the stock exhaust blows on the ground creating a lot of dust. 2) when you are getting anything out or into the bucket by hand and the tractor is running you are breathing the exhaust fumes.
I'm not sure that I like the visual appearance of the exhaust, but the other two gains outweigh that. Installation instructions are provided with the kit.

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Open hood to remove the stock exhaust. Use a 13MM socket and ratchet with an extension to remove the 2 nuts on the u-bolt clamp on where the stock exhaust pipe attaches to the muffler. Then remove the two nuts from

2) Use a ratchet with 10MM socket and a 10MM wrench to remove the bolt and nut from the lower bracket on the stock exhaust pipe.

3) After all bolts are removed, grasp the stock exhaust and twist it side to side working it off the muffler pipe.

4) Use the 13MM socket to remove the two nuts on the heat guard. Place the new 90 on the muffler and replace the bolts and nuts through the heat guard into the 90 bracket. Replace nuts and tighten

5) Locate the correct cutout on the inside of the hood. Marked 3X20 for 3000 series tractors or 4X20 for 4000 series.

6) To cut out the hole in the hood you will need a 3-5/8th inch hole saw. I put the pilot bit into the hole saw so that it extended about 3/8ths of an inch beyond the saw. That way I could center the saw in the cut out circle to mark the center. After I got the center marked I extended the pilot bit out longer so that I could see that it was on the mark I previously made.

7) The hood is a black plastic material that cuts real nice. Cut out the hood keeping the saw flush with the hood as you make the cut. Don't worry about the hole being ragged. The plastic cuts nice. Also I made my cut from the inside. I was worried about the paint, but it cut nice from the inside also.

8) Install the rubber into the hole you just cut in the hood. When I went to do this I thought it wasn't right. Just work it all the way around into the hole and it fits fine.

9) Slip the new exhaust pipe through the hole in the hood and your done.

It took me longer to write this email than it took to do the install. That's how easy it is!

I would love to be able to post pictures, but I am clueless as to how its done. Don't worry about drilling a hole in the hood. I used a 3 5/8" hole saw and it cut very well. I am somewhat of a perfectionist, so I stressed about getting the hole perfectly centered. In the end I ended up just going for it. When I was done cutting, the hole was about 1/8" off center! It didn't matter because the pipe aligned perfectly anyway. I guess they build in a margin of error. The vertical exhaust looks great and once I get a canopy I think I will be pleased with the finished look of the tractor. Then maybe I will go for the air seat, armrests, and front fenders. Lots of $$$ to spend. My wife will enjoy the bills.

Hi dirtworkseqip

I agree with everything you said but I like the looks after the install. Looks more like it's big brothers. And the loader arms stay a lot cleaner. ;)

The trick to centering the hole is to just have a slight amount of the pilot bit extending past the edge of the hole saw. Then start the drill with the hole saw lined up on the guide marks. just run the drill enough to mark the center of the cut with the pilot bit. Now reset the pilot bit so it is extended beyond the end of the hole saw about 1 inch. Using the previous mark, start drilling thru that point keeping the hole saw level and plumb with the hood and not at an angle. Once the hole saw contacts the underside of the hood keep a steady speed and cut thru the hood. Its easier done than you think. The hood material cuts really nice and clean. I don' know why a JD dealer would recommend against cutting the hood. The type of material that it is. I really don't think there would be a problem with it cracking at the hole and ruining your hood. Its a really tough semi flexible material.

Ok! Ok! Ok!

You've convinced me that cutting it isn't an issue. ;)

The instructions seem simple enough. But, I'd still like to see a picture though. :p Can ya do that?

rominio, PM me on TBN or email me at dirtworksequip@aol.com with your email address and I can send you the install pics. I can't post them here because I didn't download the pics to photobucket before I deleted them off my camera, but I still have the install saved in an email that I can send you.

Sincerely,
Dirt

There's some pictures posted in the JD Owning/Operating forum - if those are the same, then I think I get the idea. The stack looks pretty cool - I'll have to check out the pricing, etc. with my dealer.

Thanks for your help!
