Lately my 4310 seems like it has been putting out a little more smoke than usual, and that smoke smells a little different than usual diesel smoke. Frankly, I don't know much about diesels, so I have no idea what the deal might be.

Anyone have any suggestions? I don't know much now, but I'm always up for learning.

Thanks !

Are you working it harder than you usually do? Is the fuel in your area blended differently in the summer?

Adegiulio, it's probably more in your head then nose...or another blend of diesel (as Kenny wrote). Bio-diesel, for example, smells like french fries.

But, what does it smell like? Next, check your oil and coolant. Although unlikely, you may have coolant seeping in to one or more combustion chambers (hope not, that's a blown head gasket or cracked or warped head). if any of these, you'd see some white smoke, most likely.
Also, if you let the engine idle at a low RPM frequently, it might be getting sooted up. Then hard running can clean it out, but I don'tt think that would result in any difference in smells.

Yes because your engine is cooking the leftover particles:laughing:

I've never used bio-diesel, but a guy I used to work with used it in a smaller Deere (2210, IIRC). He said it was great to use, but all the neighborhood dogs would follow him around when he was mowing.

Adegiulio,

Also check you air cleaner elements to ensure they're not dirty. That could account for the extra smoke and perhaps also for the different smell if you're not getting optimal combustion. In this case your engine operating temperature could be a little higher than normal, too.

Are you watching your temperature. An overheating diesel has a slightly more acrid smell to the exhaust, and also can smoke more, depending upon load conditions. Check your radiator fluid levels and wash out your radiator thoroughly if you suspect it is even getting a little warm. Also you might want to check the thermostat.
