Has anybody resealed and installed bearings, if necessary, in their own wheel motors. I've down loaded the seal installation instructions, it doesn't seem to be a difficult repair. Any personal experience would be appreciated.

i've attempted to repair my 1430 wheel motor once so far. i took off the back end to replace the seals but when i was putting it back together some of the bearings that were on a ring fell out and these were not in the seal kit. so, in order not to cause any more damage to the motor i bit the bullet and sent it down to Power trac for the repair. next time, i have a have a better idea of what to order from a white distributor for the other bearings that i may need in addition to the seal kit so when i attempt it again next time i will have all the parts that i think i will need on hand so i can do it all in one shot. one tip: take some red fingernail polish after you take the motor out and draw a line down the center of the motor so you have a reference of how it all aligns when you put it back together. Hope this helps.

I had a leaking seal in one of my 425's wheel motors. It's been so long ago that I don't remember any details, other than I bought a seal kit for it. I do know I cleaned everything in a parts washer before I put it back together.

I have a 20 ton press. I'm pretty sure I had to use it.

I have another wheel motor that developed a leak on the self. I just haven't gotten around to fixing it.

Thanks for the help. I guess it's not to popular repairing your own wheel motors. I'm going to try it after I get a spare motor. I've found several places to purchase the motor at a better price. Horticattleman states the shaft is ground to PT's spec. is this true.

I dont exactly remember what was the deal with the motors (Powertrac sent me the first three replacements under warranty and I bought the last one from them like an idiot).

I am sorry now I remember. It was the motor on the trencher that was milled down and White said they could not provide a replacement.

The wheel motors have a standard a 1-1/4" tapered shaft.

Why did your wheel motors need replacing and not repairable.

The wheel motors have a standard a 1-1/4" tapered shaft.

The later model, "higer torque" White CE ones have 1.25" shaft. The earlier model, White RS ones have a 1" tapered shaft.

I scratch a match mark along the side of the motor. Solvent can't remove it.

Yep. Gotta make sure which version you have. I've got the "high torque" White motors. I shudder to think about working on my slopes with the "low torque" version...

I didn't realize you had the CE motors. If so, you shouldn't have to worry about increased pressure from your latest mod... I think they're rated to much higher pressures -- they're a true wheel motor.

I had RS motors.... my mod CharLynn S replacements were expensive but money well spent.

I just used my PT yesterday, moving brush from my neighbor's house from a couple of 6" locusts that our winter ice storm brought down. I was carrying loads of brush that'd make the PT pucker if I wsnn't careful, as I climbed out of the 2-foot deep ditch between above my garden. With the RS motors, the PT would've done good to traverse that ditch with no load...

Gravy,

I have the CE motors. Worked on tractor yesterday installing wheel box covers noticed another wheel seal starting to weep a little oil. Wouldn't be long will need seals and outer bearings. Had a lot of seal leaks mostly my fault. Lots of hours with wheels set wide. Still trying to find best deal on spare motor, any suggestions.

Kent,

I'm not sure that I have CE's, just that they are the higher torque motor that came out in about 2005 on the 425. I'm not the guy doing the modifications. I think that's Stray.

Clarke,

Several years ago I bought a White motor that I *think* is a CE for my PHD project (I don't remember for sure). I got it for about $300 from an online supplier, but I don't remember who it was. It wasn't Surplus Center or Baileys. It might be in my thread about the project, if we can find it. Edit - I found it - hydraulicsuperstore.com.

I had one pretty bad seal leak after running reversed wheels for a while. When I redid that motor, I got seal kits for the others, too. I get occasional seepage from one, but not enough to justify actually doing the work. I don't run my wheels reversed any more.

When I needed one, nobody had them in stock.

I got the name of the closest distributor from the White web site and called them. They took the order over the phone and had White build one for me. There was a White imposed emergency build surcharge of $30. I didn't mind that, but the cretins at White also required me to accept and pay for overnight shipping.

UPS ground from the White plant to my house is two days. That one day quicker stuff, which I didn't need, cost me an extra $35. White and Power Trac are a good match for each other.
