4230 John Deere tractor w/ shifter problem

My 8 speed power shift gear shift lever is hung up on the reverse side of the u. I cant get it back to neutral. It will move forward and backwords on the reverse side but the tractor will not move. When Ilet out the cluch the engine lugs down. I thimk it is in two gears at once. I think it is a linkage problem. Any suggestions I have hay down.

My 1st guess wold be binding/rusty operating cable. Next guess would be wear or malfunction of lever(parts key 7)
