Yesterday I changed the oil and filter on my JD, it had 360 hours on it and this was about the 8th time I've gone through the process. When I removed the old filter, I noticed the large nut that threads onto the filter stud mount was about two turns loose. I tightened it up before installing the new filter but have never noticed that nut being loose before.

I'm wondering now what purpose that nut serves, and what would happen if I had failed to tighten it up. Any ideas?

Thanks.
