JD 4200
JD 4200 with about 230hrs. 3 pt with a 5ft mower when fully raised will drop a couple inches then raise back up. It doesn't matter what the engine rpm is it keeps going down and then right back up. What could be the problem?

Long time known issue. A search on the forum would turn up a few hundred posts. Crud in the 3pt valve. If it hasn't been scored, then a good clean will fix. Also the high pressure filter , if present, needs checking. If not present needs added.

Is the 3 pt valve under the seat and how difficult a job for a novice mechanic? Can you please explain further regarding the high pressure filter being missing and where is it located?
Thank you

I still need a little help. Where's the 3 pt valve and the high pressure filter? The 3pt stays up when I close the stop valve. I've been searching this topic on this site as well as GTT with no luck.

Here is a schematic of the hyd. oil flow of the rockshaft. Also a brief from the service manual showing rockshaft parts.
Early on with the 4xxx's including the 4200, there were problems with a screen in the oil line under the seat that could blow out and parts of that screen becoming lodged in the valve. Not sure if it is the flow valve (to the front under the seat between the legs) or the control valve.

Open up the valve "B" in BT's drawing. The inline mesh screen is useless, IMO, and other tractors
don't have it. On my 4300s, the inline screens had been pushed open by the hyd flow.

I believe the screen is shown in kfkrug's pic as "inline filter". That screen should be checked to see if it is still intact or if it is blown out. The parts of this screen can end up in the control valves, and cause some problems. Don't know for sure if they are causing the problems that you are having. Just that it might be the cause.

Thanks BT I'm up to speed now. Would you suggest a total rebuild of the control valve or just open the cover, clean out the valve and replace the screen filter? If I replace the screen filter do I have another option such as no filter or a better filter?
