I bought it used on Dec 31, 2011 and found the leak about 3 weeks later, after the first time I used it. Sorry for the confusion. When I bought it he told me it was a good one owner tractor which he originally sold when it was new.

Only 1.5 hours and 3 weeks later discover a leaky seal??? correct???
Maybe the dealer didnt know???? Maybe he did?? But it is just one of them things. If you bought it "as-is" and signed paperwork that states that....
Kinda like buying a used car. Same thing happens all the time.
Now trying to charge That much, if he indeed had to "split" the tractor, I can see the cost. And I dont know how anyone could make a living spending two days and splitting the tractor for only $500. Sounds like you got a killer deal on the repair, but that isnt the dealers fault.

Most dealers would have done better on that used deal. go to the other dealer and let the 1st dealer ownership know why you didnt buy from them.....
