40x64 pole barn electric install

Many of you read my question about installing walk boards across the 8ft span trusses. I have taken your advice and decided against that for now. I am 6'6" 320lbs and there is only about 5 1/2ft for me to walk up there so I am using scaffolding stacked on my smallest trailer hooked to the 4720. So far it is going well. Sorry for the bad cell phone pics. I will get more as we make progress.

All is going well so far. Should be ready to start hanging lights Monday after lunch.

Question for all you electricians. I bought some used lights out of a factory. (Metal Halide I think) They have a multi tap balast 120, 240, 277v. I want to wire them 220V. I assume I need to run 2 hot wires from the breaker and a ground wire?? Then I should hook to the 220V and common wires????? and ground to chassis? Is this correct??? No neutral wire only green ground?

Or maybe run a 4 wire coax, (two hots, nuetral and ground).

Not sure, that's why I asked. Never touched that kind of lighting.

It depends on the fixture.

Most of the time they are part tapped a common then 120 then 240 then 277.

Tie one leg in to common the other to the voltage you want to use and isolate the other wires if they arent from the factory.
don't forget you need 2 pole breakers for them.

Why do you want to run them on 220v?
Then I would be using conduit and 2 colored wires not romex it gets too confusing for most people that the whit is hot on the in 220v circuit.


Notice I said common not neutral there isn't any neutral in 220v system. just 2 hots and a ground.

The only reason we run 277 is to pull it off a 480v 3 phase y system.
And the higher the voltage less current more lights on a beaker.

I would consider running the lights on 120v if I were you, otherwise, both the breaker and the wall switch will need to be double pole in order to break the hot legs. And of course it will get really complicated if you want to do a 3 way switch setup.

Why run them off 220? What is the amp rating on them? No advantage on running them off 220 vs. 120 except wire size.

I cant remember the amp rating right now. They have 400 watt bulbs.

I am running 3 12 guage solid wires in conduit to them. I think I know how to wire them and thanks for replies above. One hot to the COM wire and other hot to 240V and green to chassis ground... Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I plan to put in contactors in the future and divide into banks of 3 lights.

I am wiring them 220 because that is the way the man who writes the checks wants it done
