40x60 Metal Building Cost?

Great thread as I am also interested in building a 40' X 60' building. If you like this thread, check out garagejournal.com, they have a ton like this one.

If anyone is shopping for a metal building, see if the salesman will tell you the weight of all the steel components. Not insulation and doors but just structure. And get their price of the structural stuff. Im curious since steel prices have dropped 30-40% in the last year.

I just bought some steel I beams and plate at Triple S steel and paid 51 to 56 cents a pound for new not surplus.

So anyway im wondering what the building companies are getting per pound for the buildings, to compare to just going to the steelyard and buying the components yourself.

....I"d need a storage for my toys, tractor, atv's etc. I don't understand why everybody builds a pole building, high structure, 12,14 ft. What is the purpose for the hights?
My neighbor has a pole building 25x45x14. He parks his small boat ,his truck, Harley, small JD mover, and a couple of junks there. Thats it. 3 car garage size blng. would've been plenty. He spent 30 000 for what couldn't been 10000. If he needed it for a hay or he wanted some built in rooms , then OK, it makes sense. But nothing like that in his case. Just tons of wasted material and money. And he has a condensation inside issue. I believe many people are just like him. Big, tall building and the biggest object inside is a pick up truck.
Please don't tell me , that a pole building is the cheapest structure... I understand , that a pole building without a concrete floor is maybe only option and it is a great option. But with a concrete floor / slab/.??

I just don't get it.

Joe

I agree with the above. I just finished a 30 x 40 x 11 high pole building with a 10 x 16 OH door and a man door (Cleary built). 1 foot overhangs on the sidewalls and a ridge light. Building cost errected and complete: $12,200. Then added the 4" rebarred concrete and 16' apron and excavating costs and compacted fill to total $16,500. (no electric as I'm in a remote area). I'm happy.

Everything I have easilly fits thru the 10 foot door including a large boat I plan to store. And MOST CUTs are going to fit thru a 10 foot door. :D

OH....and venting the soffits and ridge is critical in these buildings.....IMHO.

IMO opinion it doesn't make sense to build a building less than 14' high.

If you use a overhead door you down already down to 13'.

To build a building a foot or two taller is pennies on the dollar during construction and priceless down the road when you want to park something that is to tall for a shorter building, like a fifth wheel camper.

Just talked to the builder. The total cost for materials, including concrete for the entire 40x72, site prep, gutters, and other incidentals $28,500. Labor for 6 guys x 2 weeks $13,000. Total 41,500 (turnkey) 2 week build time. No upcharge on the materials and lift.

Consider having all insulation installed by the builder. My neighbor did not on a large building and repeatedly said when installing the insulation later dumbest decision he ever made. He had to rent a lift to install the insulation. Fourteen foot walls makes for a long reach when installing insulation and trying to keep it looking half way decent.

I just built a 40'x24' for my wifes grandparents, i went all out for them cuz they wanted the best. Its got 2 10' by 9' over head doors, one 36" man-door, 2 windows, 4" 3000psi pad. I went with a footer and block foundation and stick framing over pole barn style. The foundation is 2 feet on concrete on bed rock, 2 corse below grade and 5 above. if you do the math that is not below the 4 foot frost line, but i hit bedrock as little as 16" down, so where i could i got as deep as i could, the building inspector said that you couldnt ask for a better foundation. so that put me to ease.

Barn=$16000
Foundation with pad and 100 tons of stone=$15000
electric=$2500 could have done it cheaper, but i had to pay some labor...
Site work= i did myself

so total about $32000. If i did it again, which i will be for myself soon. i could probably cut the cost of the barn 1/2 and do it myself and not pay a contractor to do it.

i'll post pictures tomorrow maybe if i can remember to have my wife take them.

i m going to be pricing a 40x30 for myself, but i am going to do most of the work including the block and concrete, i'll let you know what i come up with. i was going to go to 84 lumber and have them quote me a kit. i have to get me driveway ready for paving first, just bartered that deal.

They just finished mine today. Built by some local Amish. Took them 3 days. 30x40x10. 1' overhang all around. Winscoting, 18' insulated garage door with opener, 3' man door, 4" concrete floor with floor drain, single bubble vapor barrier/insulation on walls and roof, vented ridge and soffit. I did the site work. Total price: $12900. Still need to get the lighting and electrical done.

I will try to attach some pictures (you will see the garage door is not installed yet but it is included in the total cost). Also, he needs to come back in two days to cut the concrete seams.

The cost breakdown:
materials $7288
concrete 1524
gravel/wire/drain 674
labor/concrete 1000
labor/building 2400

Total $12886
