Bump!
Under $10k is not realistic unless you are using salvage materials of sawing your own lumber which is going to cost you a lot more than $10k if you count your labor for anything. Just the 5 in floor would be $3700 for concrete in my area.I guess it's about time I revive and update this thread! There is very little info on the web about small farm shops so I feel obliged to post what I can about mine. The huge 80-120' wide farm shops with 40' doors and price tags well into the six-figures are cool to look at, but most of the design, construction and layout info is completely irrelevant to the small farmer. Hopefully this thread will be of help to some fellow small farmers that don't want or need to spend a fortune for a basic work area. My goal is to have a fully functioning shop for under $10K, so far I'm doing well on that goal.
I've been quite busy with my construction business, saw milling and farming over the past year or so but I have made some good progress on the the building:
-All the walls are up except the south wall
-Large 12x20 hinged double doors installed on the west end
-24x40 5" slab poured for the shop half of the structure
-three sets of pallet racks installed
-basic electrical in the shop is wired (lights, outlets, etc)
Things yet to do before winter:
-install south wall w/ two roll up doors, walk door and two windows
-build and install some sort of 12x16 door for the shop
-install gable end trim to seal off the roof/wall joint
-either install wall between shop and equipment area or at least some sort of temporary divider to keep the heat in
-install wood stove
I'll try to get some new pics as soon as possible and more info will be forth coming.
