Thinking of adding the 485 Backhoe to my 4035HST.
Would be interested in hearing from other 4035 owners who have done the same.

Thanks!

If I had to do it over again I might try to find a used mini-excavator. Not to say the backhoe on my 4035 is an issue, although the hydraulics to it now seem to be at the moment. It is just a problem to have to remove the 3 point arms from the tractor whenever I want to use the backhoe, and then I cannot easily use other rear attached equipment. If it were easier to switch back and forth between the backhoe and other rear attachments it would be great. Right now I try to do all the work possible with my 3-point equipment and then at the end of the season switch over to the backhoe.

As for its capabilities. I have dug through some pretty hard clay with mine, it just takes time and small bites. Using the backhoe and front end loader I've dug a six foot deep 20X30 foot watering hole for my cattle with just a few days of work. I've also planted a dozen large trees with huge root balls with very little effort. Again it just take time and realize you are not going to move dirt like people do with dedicated backhoes. Due to the length of the arms you will have to reposition the tractor quite often as you are digging with it, and a lot of times you may be dumping dirt in a place you will eventually want to dig with the hoe. Unlike an excavator the arms only swing so far from side to side and reach is limited. Same goes if you want a deep hole, you may end up compacting dirt with the tractor as you will have to make several passes in the same hole as you go deeper.

I do wish it had a little more power as I have run into fairly small stumps/roots that will not come out and will stop the hoe.

My backhoe has a 16 inch bucket with teeth. The teeth are extra.

One other consideration would be to add a thumb to the backhoe to use it to pick things up. I would like to have one with mine, but not sure how that would work with only two rear hydraulic ports.

Best of luck and let me know if you have other questions.

I think the 485 is the perfect size for the 4035. I have been thinking about maybe upgrading to a 5035 tractor, but still wont go with a bigger backhoe. I agree with ranwin33 about taking time to do your job, after all it is a "compact tractor", not a full size backhoe. I have a 16"and a 10"bucket. The smaller bucket works better for digging stumps and the main thing is to take small bites and dig under them. Both of my buckets came with teeth at no extra cost. If you pop the relief valve then take less at a time or dig farther around under. There are ways to boost the hydraulic pressure, but be very careful. I have 55 gallons of window wash in each rear tire and have still picked one wheel off the ground using the loader with the backhoe on without touching the pump relief. You can get the 485 with a pto/hyd pump and reservoir from some Mahindra dealers if you want, but in my opinion, it's not needed. As far as the mounting system, I think taking the 3pt arms off is a small price to pay for a super heavy duty backhoe mount rather than a 3pt mounting system. Once you get things figured out, it only takes five minutes to take the arms off and another five to mount the backhoe. Good luck and I hope this helps.
