New to the NH group. I've been looking for a new to me, utility tractor for use on a piece of property we are closing on this week. It is 50 acres of a hollow, with mature hardwood on steep slopes and 10 acres of bottom pasture.

A 4030 is available and after looking at the specs, it looks fits the bill. It's an auction, so I need to make a pretty quick decision. I've got a couple questions if anyone can help.

One item that seems differnt is that appears the fuel tank is exposed on the underside. Is this correct and if so is it something to be concerned about in the woods?

I like the weight and with loaded tires I think I'll be good. Needs a loader, but the 820 looks like it fits and I'm sure I can find a grapple for it. Also will be adding a skidding winch.

Is anyone using this model in a similar configuration? Anything I should be concerned about? Unit has a little over 1000hrs on the clock, but looks like maybe hard hours.

Thanks for you input.

I think that you are going to find this underside venerability on all fairly recent model & make tractors. Working in the woods can be very hard & expensive on them unless you add some serious shielding "down there".
I've read here on TBN all types of horror stories from loosing a hyd line & all the fluid, to a stick taking our the radiator, fan, & hyd oil cooler! It can happen so quickley no matter how cautious you are.

I know that when I started using an at vin the woods 10 years ago I learned very quick I needed a full set of skid plates from the A-arms back. I figured similar issues are going to present themselves on a tractor, but the fuel tank placement on the NH is a bit concerning. I guess I need to look at the other models and see if there are similar issues. You point is good though...popping hydro lines are not something I look forward to. On a positive note, our timber cruise turned out even better than we hoped. Definitley enough to justify some decent kit and keep me busy making lumber for a few years while after the house is built.
