Long time viewer, second time poster. What are your thoughts on this (I believe 1965) 4020? My father in law loves them and said he’d go with this out of the 3 I’ve been looking at. I won’t mention the other red and blue one, yet. Are these gassers a pain to get to run right with today’s gas? I was told that this one has the good carb on it. I’d switch to a 12v system and junk the 24v. I’d prefer diesel but I’m not having a ton of luck finding any in Indiana with a loader (for what I want to spend). This tractor would be used for doing hay work, seeding, tilling garden, etc. I sold my 4005 so I can do round bales for my cattle. Too much trouble finding help and the weather to continue doing small squares. I’m not worried about selling hay.

Man! Pallet forks for this sucker are pricey compared to what I paid for the ones I sold with my 4005.

Sounds a bit high to me, but depending on the local market could be fair.
A 100 hp tractor on gas is going to be a thirsty hog.
If the carb is in good shape and the tractor is run often the gas will be OK, when worked hard at tillage with "modern" gas they would get some valve seat erosion and wear. If a compression/leakdown test is good enjoy her.

I thought it was high too but it seems on the cheaper side from what I’m finding online and local. They’ll deliver it for free. I’m not sure how much they’d let me haggle the price.

The 4020 was the most dependable tractor I ever had the opportunity to operate. Once any rebuilding is done they command a premium. Never operated one with a gas engine though.
Because a lot of people know about them, they tend to be overpriced compared to other good tractors of the time.

I was never a JD fan, the 4020 is a nice tractor but myself from the same era I'd just as soon have a Ford 8000 without the two speed or a IH 1066 with an upgraded TA.

What about these guys? I’ve read about some hydraulic issues. Any issues with getting parts?

If it's green and has a 40 series badge on it, it will always command a high asking price simply because all 40 series JD's are not only collectable but hold their 'imagined value' well. Like Lou stated the almost 100 horse gasser will be a fuel guzzler as well and it's 2wd to boot. My personal opinion is, a 2wd unit with a loader will be limited in scope of use versus a front wheel assist unit, don't matter what make it is.

Some years back, the 4020 bug bit me and I was looking at them locally and all of them had high asking prices on them and I got discouraged quickly and but that bug on the back burner. All the ones I looked at locally (this is JD country here) we all run hard and they all needed repaired and the ones that were supposedly in good shape (with a quick paint job right over the grease) that was on them turned me off entirely. For some reason, people apply what I refer to as the '5 gallon finish' and think they are 100% restored. I don't.

Always keep in mind that any dealer will always paint a rosy picture. They have nothing to loose and everything to gain and once you buy it, it's yours no matter what is wrong with it. On a tractor of that vintage there won't be any warranty at all.
