4020 John Deere tractor
I have engine out of tractor and going to have overhauled. They said the crankshaft would have to be turned and the mains will be 20 and the rods 10 is that good or could this cause a problem just wondering

They are referring to how much they need to cut off the journals to make them perfect again. Then you just use undersized bearing inserts to make up the size difference. As long as those are standard available undersizes the crank will operate just as good as new. They may also need to line bore the block and renew the rod sizing to correct any distortion from the banging present with the old loose clearances.

Okay thanks for the info.

That should make the tractor good for another 8 thousand hours or so.

I've heard of crankshafts being turned down another .0010 on both the mains and the rod bearing's and still do just fine.

Lot's of life left in that crankshaft and if that's any indication of the condition of the rest of the engine - you might get by with only a .0010 overbore on the cylinders.

Hopefully the rebuild will be with new pistons and liners, ought to be good as new. I would check and clean all the other things, radiator, oil coolers and water pump while at it.

That should be a like new tractor.

You should be okay with turning the crank to 10's and 20's! You should be getting new sleeves and pistons with a rebuild.

Being a place that rebuilds engines a couple of things that we also do, have the injectors tested and possibly rebuilt if leaking down as well as the injection pump. One more thing, with a fresh engine it will also put a strain on the cooling system while breaking it in and it is far easier to have the radiator boiled cleaned now then after it is back together!

Very good advice.

Your old 4020 should be in tip-top shape. For the average user, it should last your lifetime.
