Question is in relation to a 2013 x738 and others that function the same way. X738 4 WD, If the right front wheel is spinning such as being stuck in the mudd, Should the Left front engage and if nothing else spin also ? Rear tires do spin and the differential does engage when stepping on the orange button. How can a pearson test all funtions of the 4wd short of hooking on to somthing in loose gravel or maybe snow (which ain't going to happen this time of year)

It works like a regular 4x4. Opposite wheels front and rear wheel spin. One front and one rear. The differential lock will only allow one front to spin. When the steering wheel is full left or right the wheels change speed so the tires don't scrub.

I would like to know more about the hydraulic drive on the front end of these tractors, specifically if the front drive wheels have any holding power or braking action similar to a shaft driven front axle setup, while descending steep inclines.

Just brought my x749 home yesterday evening, will test this out and post tommorow for you.

I often use a boxblade or landplane behind my x749 and these can be a hard pull. I have had all four tires slipping on occasion, turning forwards simultaneously. never have I seen them counter rotating but it is possible I think. I have to say that with the hdap tires my x749 has very good traction, only been stuck once when I high centered a stack of pine needles, that was my stupidity.

I am interested in the transmission 4wd question that Locknut mentions, although I seem to have good control going down hill with my mower I would like to know if the front end freewheels forward or not. Locknuts Simplicity does free wheel so you don't have the advantage of 4wd braking. Anybody know whether the x700 series with 4wd have braking for sure?

Should be easy enough to check.Start tractor, jack the front end up and see if you can turn the front wheels forward.individally,or both together. Most likely,if it doesn't hold in neutral hydro,it won't hold in forward motion either.

Any news, yet? Another way to check it would be to pull it with something on loose gravel and see if the fronts roll or skid.

Just jacked up the front with the wheels off the ground and parking brake set. I could not make both front wheels turn forward or backwards simultaneously I could turn one wheel forwards causing the other front wheel to turn opposite direction. So on my x749 with the k92 tranny I do have 4x4 braking going down a hill. I jacked up the front end and left the engine idling with parking brake set and differential lock was not depressed.

I should add that the differential lock only effects the rear wheels, the front axle behaves like a normal open differential.

I had an issue with the injector pump rack when it was new, wound up towing it a short distance to load on my trailer. I thought the tow lever was disengaged but it reingaged itself while rolling forwards, when this happened it stopped the 4520 in its tracks, had to put it in 4x4 to move it. Dragged it about two feet and realized that the tranny on the 749 had reingaged itself. Skidded all four wheels when this happened, once I put the tow lever in place correctly the mower rolled easily. I should say it isn't a good idea to tow these hydro tractors without disengaging the transmission but I was suprized that the 4520 with six 110lb rear wheel weights could not pull this mower in 2wd. The mower's brakes were released during this whole event. If you stopped on a slope and set the parking brake it would hold really well.

Thanks much for checking that out, that settles it.The way they set this up,the front axle reacts exactly like a shaft driven front axle.Could be the way they designed the front axle.It must have some sort of differential in the center with the separate wheel motors driving each axle. With no over running clutches in the hubs and the hydraulic input to each motor at rest, the front wheels would fight each other, providing resistance travel in either direction, just like any open carrier differential with restrained driveshaft movement.Kudo's to JD for building a powerful and safe machine for hill work.

Best I can tell Tuff Torq offers three different fwd axles that are hydraulcally powered from the various rear axles. Comparing your picture with these might ascertain what you have. Your picture first, then KHXN 7, 10 and 13, the x749 is using the KHXN13 model best I can tell. More information available at Tuff Torq site with larger pictures in pdf printer friendly form.

It's a 10 series.Sent an enquiry to Tuff Torq as to the operational characteristics of the different models.
