I'm looking at buying a 4' rotary cutter for my Mahindra EMax 25. Is there anything special I should be looking for in a cutter? Who makes the best cutters?

I had a 4' King Kutter rotary cutter and it was indestructible. Sold it when I bought a larger tractor.

Of all the implements KK makes they enjoy the best reputations for their rotary cutters and roto-tillers.

WHAT DO YOU INTEND TO CUT??

Ask 5 people who makes the best BH and it's possible you will get 5 different answers. The usual suspects are Bush Hog, Woods, Landpride, and a few others. I used to have a 15-48 Landpride 4ft bush hog and thought it was a well made medium duty mower. Got great service out of it, until I sold it with a JD 750 I had previous to the JD 790 I have now.

Are you planning to bush hog fields and pastures? Or, are you planning to cut the rough stuff in the woods? That would make a difference. If the former, all you really need is a standard light duty mower with a 45hp gear box. If the latter, then get one with a heavy duty rating, larger gear box, and thicker steel on the deck.

Just look at all your available options closely and see what you think fits your budget and your needs the best. Good luck.

Sorry to infringe on the thread...but I too have been shopping for a 4' rotary cutter...due to my ignorance on the topic I recently discovered that smaller cutters are available...
Any opinions on this cutter...the asking price is $500....anyone know what they sell for new?

I'm going to be cutting some nasty stuff. It's about 10 acres of pasture that hasn't been touched in about 20 years. I'll have to do some chainsaw work to get it where it can be mowed.

If you can get that mower for $500 (or less), then I say JUMP ON IT before someone else does. It looks almost new (and medium duty too), and you would probably be getting it for half price, or even less than half the price of a new unit just like it.

I just sold a 5ft Ro-Cut light duty bush hog mower (made by Taylor-Pittsburgh) yesterday for $500 and it wasn't near as nice as that one is.

NASTY STUFF is not very descriptive in terms of assisting you with an R/C selection.

I'm sorry that I thought you could probably guess what an untouched pasture would look like after so many years, small trees, briars and a lot of weeds. And I'm also sorry that I asked some knowledge to be shared. It seems that if you are not an articulate writer that you don't deserve task for some guidance. I'm sorry that I asked for the advise.

I don't know. That looks like a well-used cutter that has a fresh coat of paint. Look at the tailwheel. It's got paint on it. It also looks like the support frame for the tailwheel got a half-azzed paint job.

To the OP, I'd check that cutter out carefully. Check the gearbox for oil. Check the blade pan / blade carrier underneath it to see if it has oil on it, which is a sign of a leaking seal. See what condition the blades and underside of the deck are in. It could be a good buy, or it could be a problem child with a fresh coat of paint.

I pulled the KK 48" behind a Kubota B-series with 25-hp PTO. It cut 1-1/2" saplings without strain. May have cut 2" stuff going slow, but for the larger size stuff I ripped it out roots and all with a Ratchet Rake on the bucket.
