4 in 1 bucket or Grapple??

   / 4 in 1 bucket or Grapple?? #21
My life changed forever when I got my grapple. It's the best thing ever invented for land clearing. If I was to do it over again, I would get one like this picture. I thought I needed fancy teeth on it, and that the ideal was for dirt to be able to drop through the teeth when picking stuff up, but in reality, dirt still sticks to the debris and between the teeth when hauling stuff. The trick is to pick it up clean because very little falls through. I've also found that with my 80 hp tractor, some of my teeth get bent from time to time. I used to straighten them back up, but now I don't even bother. It works the same and it's kind of pointless.

Having two arms on top is huge. I don't think I've ever seen them closed evening on a load, and having two of them allows me to hold more debris down while driving to the burn pile compared to just one arm.

The big change I would want is having a solid bottom. After taking down some trees, digging up their root balls and filling in the holes again, I always need more dirt to make it level again. I can carry a little bit on the grapple, but it's not much. I feel that if I could carry a decent amount, it would make clearing land, filling holes and smoothing everything out go a lot faster.

The other issue with the open teeth design of the grapple is when you get stuck. I have it mounted on my backhoe, and when it gets stuck, it's pretty easy to lower the front bucket to get the tires out of the mud, then pull out of the mess with the hoe stick. The bucket acts like a sled and carries the front weight of the tractor above the mud. Having the grapple on when this happens means I have to get a sheet of plywood to put under there that gets ruined. In once situation last year, that didn't even work and I had to go get the dozer, which turned into a huge mess. If I had been able to lower the grapple down on top of the bud and been able to get the tires out of it when it happens, I'm convinced it would have come out easily, instead of creating a much bigger project.

Do you have a backhoe yet? You might need a ripper attachment for it!

Also, you might want to list your 4n1 here on TBN. I've never used the classified section here but it does still exist as far as I can tell.

Funny you should mention a back hoe, when I was still tractor shopping a dealer I was in had one just come in, M4900 or something. A bit larger than I was looking, but heck it had a backhoe! It also had 1700 hours!! backhoe would be nice but I'd probably not really use it that much, and the tractor did have 1700 hours! I got my L3540 for the exact same price, but with 340 hours, garage kept, and looked like new.. way better decision.

I just listed that bucket here on the classifieds, we'll see how it does. Not sure how I'd deal with shipping on such a big thing though, almost needs to be a local sale.

Actually, it is pretty easy to ship something as indestructible as a bucket. Just lash it to a pallet and drop it off at a shipping terminal. Nice to have metal strapping which could certainly be arranged. If you used the tractor to place the bucket on a pallet on a trailer then just drive it too a business that can secure it with metal strapping and then off to a local shipping terminal.

Let the buyer arrange the shipping. I sold a flail mower on here and he found someone on https://www.uship.com/ that came and got it. I loaded it on his trailer.

Every tried a single lid grapple?? I have zero problems holding material in with mine. Wide, skinny, misshapen whatever...if I can get it in the maw of the grapple one lid will hold it in place.

So I put it in the classifieds but not sure anyone will ever see it. I had a hard time finding it and I know its there. Could only find it by browsing manufacturers. looked under bucket and it wasn't there, tried to go edit it but saw no way to list it under buckets.

I have always found the TBN classifieds to be underutilized and kind of difficult to use.

By the way, I found it in CL but you should work "4n1" into the text somewhere. Most people don't look for "4 in 1"

Well I found it, but it wasn't easy.

And the ad didn't show until I clicked Display and changed to List View.

Then when I clicked "More Details" the rest of the pictures appeared, but they are upside down.

Weird, they post fine everywhere else. Seeing as that it probably wont be seen here anyway, I'll just leave it be..

I bought a grapple in addition to my 4in1 and ended up selling my 4in1 since the grapple is on my L45 100% of the time nowadays. I do have another tractor or two if I need a bucket but I also picked a standard bucket just in case I need it. I am with Eddie on dual claws as my first grapple had a single but you do lose lift due to the extra weight. Might check out Skid Steer Attachments | Skid Steer Loader Attachments | before you buy, my second one was from them and it is better built than my first one which I have broke several welds on.
