Chipper 4" chipper for scut

Hi,
Does anyone here have a 4" or 4.5" pto driven chipper? I am trying to decide on which chipper to buy. I am considering a Wallenstein or a Bearcat. Both are available locally. My main question is for a SCUT (BX24). Does the wallenstein feed ok on a 540 rpm pto (manual hopper)? All the others have belts to increase speed and thus increase momentum, only they use smaller flywheels. I only have a 540 rpm pto. I want this chipper due to the top discharge and I looked at both and visibly looks better built.
The bearcat is a manual feed(no shredder) and bottom discharge.
I have also considered the DR chipper because my father has one with a 13 hp engine and it took everything I fed it, but any foliage on the wood will clog the discharge(bottom). I need this before spring so I am looking for any feedback for these.

Have you checked out the Jinma chipper discussion? I have one. It has served me well. It takes some setup,but it will do a great job. I feel it is the most machine for your dollar. I wouldn't consider it for a heavy use or commercial use, but for a homeowner it is worth a look anyway.

Due to the fact that there is no local dealer to harass when it breaks or does not work as claimed, also no due to the fact of weight, jinma chipper weighs 800# and is HUGE. I only have a Kubota BX whose 3pt capacity is 680#.

I purchased a Wallenstein last August and have been very happy with it. It was ready to go with no setup and handles everything up to 4", although to me anything over 3" is fire wood.

When I talked to the salesman I thought I wanted a hydraulic feed, but he made a deal with me - take it home as is and if I didn't like it he would add the hydraulic and not charge me any setup fee. I took it home and found he was correct - the design seems to feed most things in and I saved myself $$$$.

The Jinma is less expensive by a few hundred dollars and there are others out there that are several thousand more. For my situation the Wallenstein has been a good solution for my needs.

I went with the MacKissic Chipper TPH 122, max is size is 3.5", I only have a few hours on it, but I like it. I gave $1580 for it.

I have a Bush Hog, which is really a Goosen. Run it on 21 pto hp. Does up to 5" branch. But what I liked best is that the separate shredder takes up to 1.25" branches. This is a real time saver, as you can put most of the brush right in the shredder. It weighs ~600 lbs without blower. Look for used, you can really save a bundle.

I would have to reccomend the walenstein. I have the 42 and it is awesome. It has the double hydrolic feed rollers, and it pulls in surprizingly well. I don't have to limb most things out anymore.

400 lbs that far back on the 3 pt may require front weights or the FEL on with some weight. When I use my aerator it makes the front lite. I think you will be pushing the engine on some of the bigger stuff depending on the wood and how hard it is with only 17.7 HP at the PTO. You may have to go slow and not feed it as quickly as you want to.

There have been quite a few threads on this -- Jinma is by far the least expensive, and Wallenstein and Bearcat are also well rated, and there was a recent thread on the DR chipper for our class of machine.

I have the Bearcat 70554 on my BX2350 - a bottom discharge model with shredder. At 450 pounds it is heavy back there, but I always have the FEL attached so I can carry my chainsaw around . As Gittyup says I find the shredder really worthwhile, but it's a scary thing to use when it yanks the branches out of your hand.

As for the chipper, it will bog the BX's engine down on larger stuff. If I've got a bigger (4-5") pieces I cut it into 4-5 foot sections and have no problems. Mine is manual feed so also have some control there. Mostly I use mine for smaller cleanups and have found if I keep the blades sharp the manual feed pulls stuff in on its own quite well. Smaller 3" stuff it will consume all day long without a problem. There's been discussion in the past that especially for our smaller tractors a larger flywheel weight helps balancing out our smaller PTO hp.

I also have the Bearcat 70554. Nice piece of equipment. The 125lb flywheel distinguishes it from the smaller Mac and DR chippers and really does make a difference with the bigger material. Sometimes I wish I'd gotten the top blower discharge because it can fill up the space beneath the chipper pretty quickly. I've solved that somewhat by having a long folded tarp under the chipper discharge that I just pull out when it gets piled too high and keep going. I'd recommend the chipper as a good value too, a bit more money than the smaller DR and Mac but much less money than the bigger hydraulic feed models.
