Hi,

A friend of mine is shopping for a tractor. He just purchased 4.5 acres, and it is somewhat hilly (about 15 degrees in some spots). It has been clear-cut of douglas firs, and has some smaller trees left. He needs to clear it of various vegetation that has grown in the last 5 years. It's pretty messy. He needs a tractor that can clear it, prepare for Christmas tree farm, and then maintain it from there. What do you guys recommend? The dealer is steering him towards a B7500 or B7800. Your opinion would be valued a lot.

Thanks,

there is a heck of a difference bet. the b7500& the 7800, u are talking a jump of three sizes. the 7800 is basically a b2900 without the comforts.if $$$ is not that much of a factor then u can rest assured he will be happier with the larger tractor.

I agree with Frank that the B7800 is a lot more tractor than the B7500. However, what you are talking about is not real heavy work. I have a B7500 and have been able to do some pretty incredible things with it. They are not light duty machines. If he is talking about a Christmas tree farm, I would think that a smaller footprint would be desireable. In other words, this may be a case where bigger isn't neccessarily better.

The B7500 can be a real workhorse but the B7800 can do a lot more. What does he plan to do after he gets the land ready for Christmas trees? And what is the budget?

I have a bx2200 fel, with about the same amount of property. What I have found is that the BX is very capable limited only by ground clearance. I think you would be amazed what can be done with these tractors. It is also very stable. I would think any of the three tractors would meet your needs.

Hi - Thanks so much for all the feedback, guys - my buddy hasn't really set the budget firmly, but I know that he's received prices for the B7800 in the $16,000 range, without any attachments. I believe there was a Woods brush hog that he wants, and a couple of other things.

Do you guys think that other tractors should be considered?

Thanks again,

I'm very pleased with my B7500 HST 4x4 with the 302A loader. I have a small tree farm of 30 acres, and find the Kubota a very able machine. I'm attaching a picture of the Kubota hauling a log up the hill on my place. The hill is no problem for the B7500.
