What is the general opinion on 3ph backhoes, such as the Caddigger 808.

Don't like 'em.

I would not want a 3PT backhoe on a small tractor under 50HP. The backhoe is stronger than your tractor and it has the power to break stuff including your tranny housing. The sub frame mounts distributes the stress over many attachment points and uses leverage and distance to your advantage.

Many sellers and mfgrs don't encourage the sub frame because they don't have them available for every model tractor. It's easier for them to say the 3PT is fine and then when your TRACTOR breaks, they don't have a problem. They sold you the backhoe. It is still fine. They don't warranty your tractor.

You will have a few posters that have probably have good experience using them. Pat attention to the matchup they have. Tiny backhoe on a new 40HP model or a big backhoe on a weak 20 year old grey market tractor.

I guess it would depend on what soil type you would use it on. I have a JD 8B but my property is all shale and clay.

I personally have never used anything other than a 3ph backhoe and I have not had a problem. My backhoe is well matched to my tractor though - I think that is very important as a mismatch can cause damage.

I'm sure a frame mounted hoe is probably better but a 3ph one can work too.

My soil does tend to be quite loamy and easy to work which helps.

I've got a frame mount for my jinma 28 p 4whl drive tractor, while the tractor comes in at 3500 empty add the FEL and the HOE it is closer to 6~6500 lbs heavy for sure. (I unloaded tractors crated up and hoes crated up when I got 4 tractors 2 hoes 2 roto tillers 4 FELs and some spare parts & mower.

the 2 hoes came in 1 crate which was harder to unload than the crates with the tractors! so i would assume the hoes weigh some where about 2K or so.

they are heavy for sure!

anyhow I'm satisfied with the performance of my sub frame mounted hoe, I've seen pics of similar tractors broken in half by improper use of 3pt hoes and FELs I would say that sub-frames & full FEL frames support for tractor is much better but that lots of people are using the 3pt hoes with little or no noticeable damage...

personally don't expect to be digging giant stumps and ponds using one of the small hoes, as you will be very disappointed for sure... putting in a 500 gallon gold fish pond or a electrical service underground they work tons better than a shovel... don't expect to chisel through hard pack rock with them either...

getting through the gravel layer at my place (which is 3~4' down) takes 2 times longer than the first 3' (and the compacted gravel layer is maybe 6" thick...) seems the plant/trees like this layer for high water flow but high winds uproots a lot of them as the roots don't even go much below it... I dug though it for my under ground barn elec service and water flowed right into the trench. next day (dug ~50' in 2 hrs) I came back to dig more and found the trench was full of water up to 2' from top it was ~4' deep and re-filled as I pumped it out which took 4 days of steady pumping before it stopped re-filling up... :(

I run a Woods 750 hoe on a Case 311B with eagle hitch. This is an early 60's tractor built heavy. Eagle hitch does not allow any side sway in the arms. With the proper mounting brackets it is a bear! I can easily outdig a Ford TLB . I dig heavy clay wit alot of rocks...about 50/50. On a newer, or lighter tractor I think you could be looking for some real problems...transmission case cracking from stress, or worse. Mike

I'm interested in the cad backhoe for a 354 Jinma. I was wondering if there are easly removeable subframe kind of attachment type a fellow could build? Any caddigger builders out there? bjr

I bought a used pto pump powered woods 750 that had a subframe for a ford.
I had the dealer convert it to a 3pt mount for my Kub3430 and brought the subframe home...

I believe this is a good match for me, the home user. I have put in some concrete footings, done ditch and drainage work, and dug too many holes learning how to use the hoe, etc etc

It beats a shovel and is old enough that I don't believe it can out dig the tractor's strength. (I hope) I usually operate it with the tractor running near idle (way below 540).

Sure, you would probably use 1 1/2 x 3 or 2 x 4 tube and some 3/8 or 1/2 plate. Tie in to the FEL mounts, the engine, the trans and the differential. Usually, there is a saddle mount on the bottom that the hoe cross bar sits in. Then a saddle mount that comes down onto the top cross bar mount of the hoe. That one is pivoted from the subframe in front of the axle and pulled down by a tie just behind the lower mount. Other styles are used too. Just build it stout for tractor longevity and the extra weight helps with digging.
