3830 vs 4330

I have posted a couple of times about the 3830 model. I have talked with 3 dealers all within 30 miles of my house and now have received a price of $18,750 for an L3830 DT with 723 Fel and filled Ag tires. I feel that this is a pretty fair price but one dealer also mentioned that I can step up to a 4330 DT with 853 fel for $1,600 more. I like Hp and Torque as much as the next guy and know that the 4330 has a 4cyl vs the 3cyl on the 3830. I have 2 lots of land that are 10 acres each with mild bush hog and plowing etc and I wonder if the bigger frame and extra cyl is worth the money and will the 4 cyl drink fuel compared to the 3 cyl. Money is always a consideration but the difference in payment is nominal.

I feel the extra length of the tractor with the four cylinder engine is an avantage to offset three point hitch equipment. I also feel that the extra horsepower to run pto equipment is needed as you are not buying the hydro.

I was in a similar situation. I see virtually no difference between the two. The horsepower and torque at this level is probably not going to be as much of an issue as you may think. Since you are going DT, either tractor will utilize more of the power into the wheels. For PTO power, I have yet to see where my L3830 would need more running a 84" finish mower. The biggest difference in favor of the L4330 is the LA 853 loader. More lift, and greater loading heights being its biggest bonus and that may be enough for you to go that route. If your loading a dump truck or tall trailer, you will appreciate the extra height. I had a L48 and find that what I miss most is the powerful loader it had. On the other hand, what I really like about the L3830 over the L48 is the super easy to remove loader and the higher medium range speed and more usable high range. The power is really not an issue. The 3 cylinder on the L3830 could not be smoother. I was upgrading my original idea of purchasing a L3130 HST, jumping up yet another level over the L3830 HST to the L4330 was a considerable jump, in my case over $2000 above the L3830. I really like the L3830 for various reasons. The loader is great for it's size and well built. The engine is about the smoothest, quietest of the bunch, the HST is phenominal, the rear lift capacity very nice and the overall ergonomics great. If you can afford the L4330, I would go for it simply for the loader's extra capabilities. I think the other issues are far less important. Rat...

I was interested in the 3830 then started looking into the 4330. It had more hp ( I needed hst so that helped to keep the pto hp up) Bigger, stronger, higher reaching loader and a much stronger front axle, I think it is pretty bad on fuel (HST will be worse than gears) but the positives out weigh the negative for me and don't regret doing it .. As you said $$ wise on payment is nil .. Bill

Actually, there is very little difference in the front axle. The width is slightly wider. The rear end on the L3830 is identical to the L4630. I tried the L4630 and HP wise, it just wasn't night and day. I consume about 1 gal an hour at PTO speed and significantly less doing loader work. I continue to be amazed at how well the HST works on the L30's, for some reason, even better then my Kubota L48 did which I thought was great. I agree, if you need higher lift height and a little more lift capacity, the LA 853 is the way to go. The great thing is though, even the LA 753 has more of just about everything then the JD or NH offers, especially when compared against the L3130 which shares the same loader as the LA 3830. If a considerable jump in power is needed, there is always the L5030 but still the same loader. When I compare my L3830 to my L48, both ran the finish mower very well and easily. Going uphill on my L3830 at times will cause me to back down to about 3 or 4 mph in medium, but then, the gear ratio on the L3830 is 0 to 7 in medium and the L48 was 0 to 4 mph in medium. That was my second problem or reason I opted to sell the L48, it made a lousy mowing machine, especially with that huge LA 1150 loader on it.

I had zeroed in on the 3830hst w/723fel. But then I was looking at the FEL's after the dealer had closed and was surprised at how much beefer the 853fel was over the 723fel. This is not to say the 723 is not beefy, it is. But I was sure impressed with the 853. I then looked at the beefer front axle of the 4330 and decided that between the FEL, axle and more HP (remember there is no substitute for HP!), the 4330/853 combo was worth the extra $. As for fuel usage, mine sips!

Either one is a good choice.

I always thought torque was a great substitute for HP. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You can get old gas fired tractors with 45 hp that I'm pretty sure aren't what my 38 HP diesel is.

Chieff, several years ago when I was borrowing my Dad’s Ford with FEL, to clean out my drought dried pond, I busted his front axle. I too was looking at the 3830 but when I saw in the Kubota brochure that the “Front Wheel Axle strengthened and improved durability to easily handle 2,276 pound loader capacities (L4330/4630/5030)” I had to have at least the 4330. Also the 4330 had the best value per pound of torque. Here is some more information from the Kubota operator’s manual comparing the 3830 and the 4330 implement limitations:
Trailer – load capacity 4330 -1100 more.
Rotary, Flail and sickle bar mower – same for both.
Rotary tiller – same for both.
Bottom Plow – same for both.
Pull Disk harrow – same for both.
Chisel plow – same for both.
Broad Caster – same for both.
Cultivator – same for both.

But you and I both know that you want the 4330 because bigger is better and we are just looking for justification from this forum. I know I just bought the 5030.
