A quick question for those that have experience with the 3000 Twenty series. The manual shows that the left and right tie rod and steering cylinder ball joints need to be greased as well as the zerk fittings on the 3PH. I don't see on the front end any zerk fittings to grease, so how are these to be lubricated?

Thanks for any info you can share,
Scott

Running production change (for the worst IMHO), the newer machines have fewer zerks-supposed to be "permanently" lubricated...Yeah right.

That's kind of what I thought, but I'm not the most mechanically inclined. I'm like you though, I'd rather have a bunch of zerk fittings to grease the snot out of the machine.

Designed obsolescense. Tractors aren't designed or expected to last 30+ years any more.

Just got a 3520 last week. Nope, no zerks on the steering. There are 2 on the 3ph to give you something to do.

I purchased a new 3720 almost 3 yrs ago and had exactly the same question and got the same answer. It's hard to believe JD hasn't updated the 3x20 Operator Manual yet.

For these booted ball joints without zerks, I use an 18 gauge greese injection needle, which I have sharpened with the belt sander to a very long sharp angle. It makes a tiny puncture in the rubber boot, but it seems like a good trade-off to inject it full with water-resistant synthetc grease every couple years, compared to running it dry. I've done this for years, even on my on-road vehicles. I wish I could include a link to the needles I use, but I don't seem to find them online right now.

I've seen those needles at Harbor Freight and some automotive stores. I have one but don't use it.

I am still waiting for someone to tell me where the fittings are on the 2320. Yeah sure, I can find the 2 or 3 the manual shows but I seem to find another one every time I get under the tractor that is not depicted in the manual. And yes, I have my reservations as to the longevity of the newer tractors as well.

2009 Deere 3720 manual and tractor have conflicting issues as to where to grease too:confused:

Kinda like getting under my 04' Dodge 2500... lucky to find 3-4 zerks. Hate how a person can't do preventative maintenance to things like bearings , U-Joints, ball joints, tie rods, etc anymore (either tractor or vehicle) Guess that's how dealers and parts houses keep $$$ rolling these days.:(:(
