I have 200 hrs on this tractor. Although I rarely use the braking system I have recently noticed that when I do, I hear a loud grinding sound from the back end. I've released the brake pedal so that I can use the brakes individually and hear the noise when using either pedal.
This is my first tractor so I am not familiar with a tractor's braking system and the owners manual does not mention anything at all.
Any troubleshooting I can do?

Thank you
Jim

very likely it's surface rust on the braking surfaces, which 'grows' there due to lack of use.

I bet if you press the brake pedal lightly and hold it there while driving the tractor, the noise will stop after a bit as the rust is cleaned off.

Cars that sit without brake use for a time will also make a noise like this until the surfaces 'clean themselves.

3616 has wet disks brakes running in hydraulic fluid so rust is unlikely cause of the noise.

oookay, I didn't know that....so the original poster should disregard my post....with my apologies. I learn something new everyday.

Is this the same hydro fluid used for the implements or is it the axle hydro fluid?
Sorry, I do not know how the brakes work on this tractor.

The trans and the implements all use the same fluid. There is no other fluid other than engine oil and water in that tractor.

I just didn't know that the brakes are internal when I made my previous post.

Yes I know the same fluid but is it all from the same reservoir? I thought the axles had to be filled separately.

the front axle is on it's own and needs it's own drain and fill. It is not connected hydraulically to the main fluid reservoir but the rear is.

There isn't much you can do without a shop manual and some serious grunt work - may be time to get a professional diesel mechanical to take a look.

Yes HST tractor uses the same fluid for hydraulics and gears (such as PTO(s), rear differential, speed ranges etc.) The HST and hydraulic system have separate pumps. Some tractors also have second pump for steering. The brakes are internal to rear axle. Engine and front axle each have separate oil from hydraulic system.
