Tractor
Mahindra 3540
The check engine light is flashing and the tractor has a bad loss of power. After doing a search it seems that my tractor has gone into limp mode and has to be cleared by my dealer. It is 55 miles one way to my dealer to get this fix so does anyone know of a way to clear this fault code?

I don't know about your machine but mine has a standard OBDII diagnostics plug like you find in cars and trucks and uses a standard OBDII code scanner. Most scanners can both read and clear fault codes. I just did it on my 1538, both read and cleared a code. I was checking the temp sensor to see that it was good and saw a stored code so cleared it. The diagnostics plug on mine was just dangling loose on four wires from the engine harness. It's an odd way to do it so I may soon get around to mounting it properly like Mahindra should have. Just look for a regular OBDII scanner that you can borrow or even buy one so you'll have it for all your vehicles.

The check engine lamp usually indicates a engine sensor or wiring issue. Check your wiring and plugs first before you go to the dealer. Fault will clear if you find the problem.

For no more than they cost, it is worthwhile for folks to own an OBDII scanner since they are useful for almost everything on wheels these days. Do a scan, read the code then you'll at least know where to look for the trouble.

Agreed!Would be a handy tool if you have a tier 4 engine. :cool2:

There is an issue with the firmware on these machines, that cause an errant code to be thrown due to perceived over-pressurization of the fuel rail. I had mine limp 3 or 4 times before they updated the firmware. Haven't had an issue since.

My symptoms were: Blinking Red CEL, very low power, though engine would run through the normal range of rpms when under no load.

I made the trip this morning to the dealer with the exact symptoms you are describing and before I could go pee and get back to my truck and trailer the tech had cleared the code for this issue but did not talk about any updated firmware. He told me to let it run at idle after working it hard for a few minutes before shutting it off and see if that helped. He was amazed that I told him what the problem was before he fixed it and I told him about TBN.110 mile trip for a 10 minute fix.Crazy

If he didn't update the firmware it'll happen again. Mine was every 50-100 hours.

He needs to contact Mahindra service rep directly and they will reflash the computer. Amazing that a technical bulletin has not been issued on this -you're hardly the first person with this issue.

It seems to me that Mahindra is pretty sloppy with their ECU code. I'm reading of too many problems due to bad ECU code. Is anyone checking this stuff before it goes into production? Mahindra also needs to have a more convenient and cheaper means to reflash ECUs. It's just too easy and too simple of a problem to fix instead of requiring people to drag their machines to a dealer for a simple two minute process requiring only that a box be connected to a plug and a button pushed.

ECU code is a big issue with a lot of the new Mahindra tractors. The new in house technical support person dose nothing but reflash ECUs all day.He was supposed to be taking a little of the load off the DSRs in the field.:confused3:
