I have been going over my 3510 and have a question about the clutch pedal adjustment. The manual says there should be .78 - 1.18" of freeplay, my question is what point of reference is the freeplay measured from? Is it full pedal extension (at rest) to the point of engagement?

My gut says it’s the turnbuckle rod. It would be easier than measuring the pedal movement.

The adjustment has a lot of flexibility. The goal is to get it tight enough that depressing the pedal disengages the clutch but not so tight it disengages with temperature or twisting of the machine. My guess is that using the pedal or the turnbuckle for measuring will get you there.

I measured the pedal and it has approximately 2.5" of travel before resistance is felt, the turnbuckle is much more difficult to measure due to location but I'm seeing about 1.25".

For reference the tractor is shifting fine. I guess I will go with the turnbuckle measurement, I was just hoping someone had been through this before as the manual leaves a lot for interpretation.

Take a tape measure from, the floor to the pedal at rest, then use your hand to push the pedal until you feel it hit the clutch( resistance pushing the pedal). The amount of travel is your free play.

Should I measure the vertical travel from a fixed or lowest point of the pedal or should I hold the tape on an angle to accounting for the pedals path of travel?

Im guessing an adjustment is due, I noticed today after about 2 hours of loader work when you shift the shuttle lever into neutral there is a faint grinding noise coming from the transmission when the clutch pedal is released. I never really noticed the grinding noise until it got good and warm.

This is how I measured the freeplay:

Yes, inline with the path the pedal travels.

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and adjusted the freeplay to about 1", no more grinding noise when the tractor is hot and shifted into neutral. It does seem as though the clutch is engaging much further out now in the pedal travel than it was before.
