i noticed a screeching noise when i engaged the 4X4 on my 3510 today. i fooled around with it a little and i think that the shifter is going too far, cause when i back it off just a little, the noise goes away, but it feels like i'm still locked in.

is the shifter out of adjustment? or is there a bigger problem?

Maybe the pin that holds shift fork to rail slipped or shift fork bent? Either way doesn't sound like easy fix. If slipped or bent tractor will have to be split to repair.

hmmm, that is a consideration i've missed... i usually stay in 4X4 when on the farm, it's so hilly and muddy all the time, it's just easier that way... but thinking back, it has always been kind of difficult shifting in and out, from the beginning (i bought it new). i've felt like i was having to force it into gear a lot of times. after all this time, i guess i've bent something?

BUT, the noise begins when the lever is all the way forward as far as it will go. if i back it off, even a tiny bit, the noise quits.

well, i'm a musician, not a mechanic. so i'm only guessing.

thank you for taking time to reply to my question! i appreciate you for doing so.

The 4x4 shifter fork is a common fail point and is easily replaced with minimal mechanical skills. You do have to drain the hydraulic fluid but other than that it's a pretty quick fix. Just follow the shift linkage down to the side of the trans and remove the cover with the shifter mechanism, the fork is on the inside and you'll see how it all works. A new fork is not very expensive, I've replaced several on my 4110 before I decided to bend the shift lever next to the seat where my leg would not press against it. You have to be very gentle shifting in & out of 4x4 too - rock the tractor gently back & forth forward & reverse to ease it in or out of 4x4, do not force the shifter or you will definitely bend a fork.

Now if the rear bearing on the 4x4 shaft inside the trans is what is making the noise, you will have to do a rear split to replace it and is a job that requires high skill level - I've done one of those on my tractor too, before I bent the shifter to keep my leg from resting against it when turned in the seat to operate my boxblade.

i think you're probably right about it being bent. i bush hogged a couple of hours this morning in 2X4 then i switched over to 4X4. it i push the shifter all the way as far as it can go, the shrieking starts. if i back it off just a little bit, there's nothing. i've noticed it becoming more difficult to shift in and out.

Are you shifting while your sitting still or trying to **** while your moving? Does sound like the sifter is bent. If you shift it in and its not kicking itself out id just try not to shift to far.. unless it starts to make the noise after you use it a bit that could be a bearing going out.. same is happening with my massey

That shrieking noise may be the sliding gear going too deep into it's companion gear on the rear differential input shaft. The system is very simple - the internal 4x4 driveshaft runs from the rear diff. housing thru all 3 cases up to the front of the front transmission where it is supported by a bearing and seal and your front driveshaft attached to it (inside that tube). On the rear, it has the same small bearing in the rear diff housing to support the shaft on that end. There is the small section of this shaft at the rear that is splined with the splined, flat gear sliding back & forth - this gear has the groove in it that the shift fork engages and slides the gear back & forth. There are no bushings or synchronizers, the detent for the shift fork is in the plate that you remove from the side of the trans. Nothing on the shaft but the gear and a snap ring to let the gear slide off the shaft for replacement (I've replaced mine once). That rear bearing had gone out on mine and I totally lost the engagement of those two gears and had a lot of noise. When I did the rear split for repair I found the bearing shot and the gear only had a few marks on it but it was so much trouble to get to I decided to replace the gear as well while in there. I did not replace the gear on the diff input shaft.

A rear split is extremely tedious on this tractor, I've been a pro auto mechanic for over 45 years and had a tough time getting the halves back together by myself here, there are several shafts to align while rolling this heavy rear section back together and you have to use silicone to seal the case and keep that sealed well or you'll be losing hydraulic fluid. I finally figured out that because my leg/hip would rest against the 4x4 shifter while turned in the seat working the 3 pt all the time is what put the stress on that shaft/bearing. While doing the major repair I took the shifter off the tractor and used a torch and bent the whole thing over towards the inside of the fender and down slightly so my leg would not rest against it anymore - that was 8 years and 1300 hours ago and I've only replaced 1 shift fork since then from wear & tear. Hope I never have to do that rear split again ...

Getting it apart the only problem is the halfmoon gear that can be out of set.. really take little time pulling it apart but putting it back SUCKS... good breakdown of what your seeing inside of there though that was spot on:thumbsup:
