WHY did they make such a wimpy setup for the FWA drive on the 3*20 series!
Anyone know a fix besides replacing the pinion shaft?

Well, tell us about it. What happened?

Must have torn it up...

Well . . . . Yeah!

Skidding logs out of woods and it just went. I can slide the shaft/coupler assembly forward about 1/2" to "reengage" splines but that won't last long.
Haven't disassembled yet to see what the other splines/couplers look like.

I'd not think there would/could be any play like that.. to be able to slide it around. Something else missing?

Suppose a new part as shown in pic is necessary now. Wish you well.

I had to have those similar parts replaced this past year. Cost me over $2000. I think I can attribute the failure to heavy loads of timber going down a very steep bank. (storm clean-up of large downed pine trees). Mine was getting a bit "sticky" to shift into FWA......but after extensive use on the downhill timber skidding and loader work.....those spines were shot and I lost all FWA. Expensive to fix......and I also think it is "under-engineered". Mine failed at about 450 hours.

I had a similar post about a year ago. look back.

Same problem a few years back on mine. I use mine for logging. I fixed it at very low cost and no more problems. Buy 2 new couplers, cut 1/3 off of one of them and weld it onto the other one. You need the coupler to be longer to catch the good splines further back. You will have to have some play in there so you can get it back on. Take some measurements. I also put a section of hose over the drive shaft so I could secure the coupler in place. The problem is the shaft moves around in the couplers and when the shaft and couplers move all the way back you have very few splines catching. So, make the coupler longer and stop the shaft from moving around.
