Hi All,

New to me 2007 JD3320. Had for a couple of months.

Started up tractor the other day and heard a load screetching from under the hood. Opened it up and didn't see anything particularly wrong....but smelled burnt rubber. I figured it was a belt.

I noticed that the "idler" on the belt system for the AC compressor doesn't spin and the belt just rides through it. It appears to be melting the plastic idler from the belt friction.

Is this "idler" supposed to spin with the belt? It is not spinning. I have tried loosening it up, but that didn't help. This is the part that is used to tighten or loosen the tension on the belt.....the belt appears to be in good tension.

I have included a pic from JDparts as well to give you reference. Have circled the part in my actual pics.

BTW: AC has been running fine for the past few months (and still does). I am just concerned as this doesn't look correct and the smell of burning rubber wasn't a good sign. Also the groove in the idler wheel isn't smooth...like it is melting because of the friction/heat.

Before I replace the part, was curious if I was correct if this should be spinning.

Yes it should be turning. Sounds like the bearing has locked up. After all you ever seen automotive type belt that is supposed to slide along/through a guide. Replace the idler and the belt and get back in the cool.

Thanks DanK for confirming this part IS supposed to turn :):)

I just ordered a new idler and a new belt and they should be in tomorrow afternoon....should be a quick fix (knock on wood)

Parts came in on Friday. Took about 15 minutes to switch them out on Saturday. All good now :)
