In working on this old 3165, I am trying to restore the front PTO back to original. The bottom pulley's rear was bent up, so they were only running a single belt on the front, and had changed the idler pulley out to what looks like a deck idler. I put a good used pulley on the PTO shaft from an '01 I believe. I had to pull the shaft and heat and press the pulley off, lots of fun. After disassembling, cleaning, and re greasing the shaft with the new/used pulley. I replaced the idler with a brand new pulley from the dealer and new oem belts.
Well, something's not right, I had to fight the belts on, but they're on but not very loose. It doesn't seem like the idler is backing off enough. I tried loosening the idler arm brake, and disconnected the actuator and adjusted the clevis to line up with no tension on the idler. Still seems like it's tight enough to never fully disengage. I cranked it with the deck off and everything stayed together, but while running the idler seemed to ride only half way on the front belt. When off it rests fully on both belts.
Is something out of alignment, or bent maybe? It's tight enough, so that when I engage the pto it only moves about a half inch until fully tight.
