I broke the left casting on my loader to which the bucket attaches. I have one on order from the dealer.....so I thought I would get a head-start on pulling off the broken part so I could bring it along to the welding shop to show how to fix things.....in order to get my grapple fixed up correctly (which is the problem child here).

There are two fasteners holding my broken cast part - a "bolt" (threaded pin) at the top with a nut (no problem)......and a tubuular affair at the bottom with two cross pins and cotter keys. It looks harmless enought....but, this "tube" at the bottom pivot is giving me troubles. And.......I dont understand how to remove it.

I pulled the two cotter keys and pins from each side and tried to drive it out from either end. No dice. The tube seems to rotate but either end seems independant of the center tube, when I rotate the tube? So far nothing is moving and I dont get the disasembly here. I looked at JD parts....it looks straight forward......but alas, I'm missing something. Anyone had one of these apart? Advice?

Cant help you on removing the shoes, but I knew I shoulda kept the "shoes" that came with mine...My dealer gave me the factory JD Shoes but I told em to chuck em in the scrap metal bin...For the cost of shipping I woulda gave you mine (if i had em).

But hey thats an idea..mebbe someone else out there who's upgraded to the SS/QA has the factory shoes they'd part with for cheap?

How many cross pins did you have to pull? Two or Four? On John Deere parts it appears to be a one piece bar, yet you say it rotates independent of the ends.
I wonder if its broken? Have you kept it greased?

On my JD 640 loader there are four cross pins with cotter pins. The cross bar is solid as are the pivot pins. I am thinking on mine the pivot pins are separate since they are wear items.

I pulled two 3/8" cross-pins....one on each side. Yep...it seems like it should just be a one-piece bar that pushes out from either side...and that is why it is unpainted . But it doesnt budge laterally when I tried to drive it with a block of wood and a hammer. I can rotate it somewhat, but when I hold the end it does not turn with the center. I only have 250 hours on this machine....and yep, I keep it well greased.

In the pic below, its the shiney tube that connects both sides that is giving me the problem. It sure doesnt appear to be that complicated and I cant find any other fasteners on the machine, or when looking in JD parts.....:confused2:

I sense I am going to have one of those "ahah" moments coming up....followed by a "duh".;) I guess I will ask the JD service manager how to disassemble.

I wonder if the mounting bracket needs to be removed so they slide out from the inside and not pushed out. but that leads to the question why they are pinned on the inside of the brackets. JD parts only shows the 2 pins but nothing about how its removed.

I changed mine, but don't recall any issues. Maybe just pull the carrier off the bar, don't try to push the bar thru the carrier.

That bar is just to keep the carriers in sync with each other. Properly spaced and in the same roll position.

My 300 came with an earlier style carrier that was prone to breakage, even though they never broke the dealer gave me 2 new ones. so I did a little experimenting with the old ones. made a Doctor Seuss contraption

I think you are right, the pins are just to maintain the proper spacing between the carriers, so it wouldn't matter if they were inboard or outboard.

That pic that JD4310 posted is pretty discriptive of the situation. Also the parts explosion. With The loaders mast going between the flanges on this casting there has to be another fastener means....or that shaft has gotta slide.

Dazed and confused and foggy too.

Does it possibly have a shoulder or collar that holds it captive between the two loader arms? If so maybe #15 in the illustration above has to be removed first. I cannot tell by the picture or exploded diagram.
Just a thought.

edit: after carefully studying the diagram the shaft itself appears to have a shoulder on each outer side. I am guessing the #15 must come off.

I'm not by the tractor now.....but I think you gotta be right. The exploded view really doesnt show a part tho.....I may get over by the tractor today for another look. My replacement part gets to the dealer tommorow...so I will ask the service manager if I cannot figure it out.

I had hoped to take this part to the welding shop so he could use the broken piece to size up my grapple repairs. Some stuff will just have to wait. ;)

Thanks for the help.
