I need to change the spin-on fuel filter and water bowl filter on my JD 3005. Had an issue with water in the fuel, bowl and filter were solid ice during below-freezing days we had recently. I damaged the water bowl filter while thawing it out, and drained fuel until it ran clean, but there was lots of black-ish gunk in the filter, I can only assume it algae. I was in dire need of the tractor that night, so I used some pantyhoes/nylons (reluctantly donated by my wife, with a strange look on her face when I asked for them) as makeshift filter cover and put it back together. Have not used it since.
Due to the water separator bowl filter being compromised, I plan to 1- drain the fuel tank, now that temps are mid-40s and inspect the fuel, 2-replace damaged water filter, 3-replace spin-on filter on the motor.
Any tips or tricks, cautions, that will make this go easy? I'm ready to 'just wing it', been wrenching on stuff like this my whole life... but no shop service manual, so it doesn't hurt to ask if someone has pointers... 'there's a bleeder screw to crack here', etc. Air in the injection system can be a royal PITA!

If u "vise grip" the CLOSEST rubber hose will keep air out..
If u fill the spin-on filter BEFORE u screw it back on will help..
Once it starts, hold the throttle almost to the floor until u hear the rpms stumble & pick back up will keep u from turning any wrenches on the fuel system.
DONT LET IT DIE.. or its wrench turnin time..
Good luck

I got the fuel drained (cloudy, will let it settle, drain of any water that shows up, and mix with good fuel or burn it in my torpedo heater), got the water separator filter in with no issues. Spin on filter was a bear to get loose, was the original filter. New one went on easy, WIX 33399. Put some fresh clean fuel in the tank, cycled the key a few times to let the fuel pump prime the system until I didnt hear bubbles going into the fuel tank from the return line, and fired it up. Stumbled and stalled twice, but fired up and ran... used it to do a few things, hauled a round bale feeder to the knob where we're gonna start feeding the cows, half a mile on the road, ran fine.
